"No... No, SHE CAN'T BE! Y-YOU'RE LYING!" I screamed, and flung the door closed in the old woman's face. Was this some cruel joke? I peeked through the peephole expecting to see the woman laughing, "JUST KIDDING!" but the same grim look was plastered onto her face.
I slowly opened the door a few inches. "T-There must be some mistake." I whispered. Yes, that's what it was, a mistake! There were probably a million Angelinas out there. The woman- Elizabeth- had probably been misdirected.
"I'm afraid there's no mistake child." said person whispered.
I could hear the sadness in her voice. Either she was telling the truth, or she was a really good actress. I was hoping for the latter, but I knew it was probably unlikely.
The tears finally fell. Mom and Ginger were the only family I had. "B-B-But... How? When? Where?" I stuttered.
"I'm afraid it's not my business to tell." she said, after patiently waiting for the years to stop. "But she would want you to have this." Elizabeth brought out a black box and handed it to me. On a small sticky note were the words, 'Open it, you old kook!' Well! That was rude! I frowned, but opened it anyway.
Inside was... Some money and a piece of paper? I took the paper and read it. It said:
"Eggs.
Milk.
Fruity pebbles.
Onions.
Apples."
"My mother wanted me to have... a grocery list??" Elizabeth looked at the list and her cheeks flushed. "Whoops. Sorry, wrong box!"
She stuck the grocery box into her purse, and drew a small wooden one. "This, is what your mother wanted you to have." With shaking hands, I turned it over. Carved into the wood was an angel. I opened the box to find a necklace with a golden angel. "This... This was my mother's!" I exclaimed as I recognized it. "She always wears it! I doubt she ever takes-... took- it off." I reached towards the necklace so I could put it on. I wanted to treasure the the jewelry that my mother had loved.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you..." said a voice. I jumped. I had almost forgotten that Elizabeth was still there. "Why not?" I asked curiously. "Once you put it on..... I wouldn't take it off." I frowned. Well, that was a bit strange. "Why not?" "Because.. Maybe it's best I don't tell you." Would it kill this lady to give me a straight answer for once?!?
"I can't tell you much. I must be going now, but I'll be back tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. sharp. I'll try to explain as best as I can." "But Ms.-" I said.
"Call me Elizabeth." she interrupted in a gentle voice. "Great-aunt Elizabeth."
