"Moving! Mom you can't be serious! What about Trey, my friends, and college!" I yell.
"Honey, you can go to college up in Montana. As for friends, you can make new ones and still be in touch with the ones here. And I never really liked Trey anyways. I know this is hard for you and that its a big change, but I think its the right thing to do." she answers coolly.
"The right thing to do! Why! Because you don't want to be reminded of dad anymore!?" I can't help but start to cry. The memories of Dad overwhelm my mind immediately.
"Oh honey, I know it's been hard for you after he died. Which is why I think we should move, somewhere the memories can't haunt as much as they would here. And I'm sure they need at least one more lawyer in Montana." She can't help but start to cry too.
She just sits there and holds me on the couch while we both cry together. I wish he was still here, wish he would just magically appear at the doorway and yell "surprise" at the top of his lungs informing us that it was all just a joke. After crying together for ten minutes though, he still doesn't show up and never will. Mom suggests that we pull out the scrapbooks that we would make on Christmas every year as a family. I run up the stairs as fast as I can without falling to retrieve the scrapbooks from my room. I hurriedly grab the box of them and take them downstairs to where mom was waiting in the living room. We set up some blankets, pillows, popcorn, and put in Dad's favorite movie; Pete's Dragon. We laugh for hours at all of the memories held in these old scrapbooks. I finally agree with Mom that we can move, under one condition, we can go on a major shopping spree. We finish at around ten and decide to camp out on the living room floor, just like we used to do with dad all the time.
Mm-mm! I smell pancakes, bacon, eggs, and freshly squeezed OJ. I decide to pull myself up off our custom made 'bed'. Mom smiles when I enter the kitchen, I grab two plates, cups, and forks. Mom gracefully fills our plates with delicious goodies. I can't wait to dig in and eat, I wonder though what the special occasion is since she has already broken the news about moving.
"Sooo, whats the special occasion? I mean it can't really get any worse then it already is. My dad is dead, i'm a senior in high school who is moving to Montana, and all of my friends are here in California."
"Don't be so dramatic, I thought I would be nice and make you your favorite breakfast. I know that this is hard on you, and I wanted to make it up to you." she says this in a 'duh' kind of way.
"Okay, but before we leave let me text my friends and let them now of the big news."
"Take as long as you need." she flashes her beautiful and perfect smile.
"Thank you," I turn to give her one of my well-known hugs "I love you."
I run upstairs before she has a chance to say anything. I grab my phone and send a group-chat to all of my close friends letting them know of the move. Almost immediately Bailey, my BFF in like the whole wide world, replies.
"Moving! Your kidding right? Like you can't be serious, what about the rest of us?"
"I'm not kidding Bailey, my mom just told me the news yesterday" Trey is the next to reply.
"Moving? But babe, we had our whole life planned out ahead of us. How are we going to do a long distance relationship?"
"I know, I love you though Trey. We will make the relationship work. Even if i'm in Montana."
"We'll miss you sooo much Thia. Your the best friend I could ever ask for. Have fun!"
"Thanks Bails! I'll miss you too!!!!!!" Trey never responded to any of my texts for the rest of the day, leaving me worried.
I spent the rest of the day shopping at the mall with my mom, worry free. It was the happiest I've seen her since Dad died. It was nice a whole day without mentioning Dad. After we shopped for hours, we went to IHOP for dinner. We got home and I headed straight to my room to sleep, I had a lot of packing to do in the morning.
