The sun shone bright that summer day. The breeze passed through the tall grass that covered the uneven hillsides. A sea of green waves rippled around me as I laid there, motionless under the beaming afternoon sun, contemplating what was to come next. What will happen to our family? It's only been two weeks since Katara's passing. I felt my heart drop out of my chest when dad told me, but somehow I knew what was coming. She was old, and I recognized that. It's just that you don't realize how much you loved someone until they've slipped away.
Kai understood me. He came to see me every single day after his training with Tensen. He stumbled to catch his breath when he ran to bring me food and sweet nothings to try and lighten my mood. I appreciated his efforts but, my sadness still grew within me. I tried to fool him with my phony smile, but I knew he could see right through me. I could see that his heart was made of gold, that it was pure and well-nurtured. I knew that he had finally come to terms with his troublesome past. Forgotten, or at least moved past, what had torn his childhood apart and corrupted his young soul. It was my turn to take that path to recovery, but I knew that my mind was not ready. I feel as if I've been pushing him away from me. Like I've created a false barrier of happiness to hide my true feelings instead of telling him.
I sat up from the grassy bed beneath me and closed my eyes. My legs crossed and my fists touched before me. I began to empty, yet concentrate my mind to travel to the spirit world. Faint glimpses flashed in the darkness but a solid image never appeared. Frustrated, I slammed my fists onto the ground. A strong gust of wind blew around my tense body and tears began to stream down my sun-kissed cheeks.
"I'm sorry Kai." I said to my self as I stood up. I began to walk towards Pepper. It was time to leave.
