A Bad First Impression

I'm in art class, daydreaming and not listening at all to what out teacher is talking about. I'm staring at the red head at the table across from mine. She's so beautiful. Like stunning. I can't believe I never noticed her before. Wait...do I mean beautiful as in "Wow, she's pretty!" or "Woah. She's beautiful." I don't have time to answer the question because the teacher calls on me.

"Well. Answer the question, Alex." She says sternly.

Crap. My eyes widen and my face turns scarlet. The red-head stares at me.  I glance at the board, hoping for a clue. The board has a bunch of lines criss-crossing. I have no idea what it means. I stare at the table I'm sitting at. "I...don't know." I say shakily.

"Maybe pay attention then." She turns back to the class. "Can anyone help her out?"

The red-head raises her hand. "Cross-hatching." She says in a soft voice.

The teacher nods. "Good job, Avery."

So THAT'S her name. Avery. That's such a pretty name. I stop myself. Why am I thinking these things? I shake my head. I'm just weird today.

A few minutes later the teacher finally says "Alright. Time to go. Roxanne, don't forget to pick up your poster."

I sigh in relief and pick up my purple bookbag. It feels like a ton of bricks but I manage to haul it onto my back and walk out the door.

Avery is right in front of me. I can see her straight red hair bouce as she walks. I can't tell where she's going. Every day I go to the library at the end of the day and read until my bus is called. I start walking towards my destination and notice that Avery hasn't changed directions. Is she going to the library too? I can't tell if I hope she is or she isn't. It would be pretty embarrassing to talk to her after what happened.

She's going to the library. She opens the door and notices me. Holding the door open, she says "Here."

"Oh thanks." I say walking through the door.

"No problem." She enters after me and lets the door swing shut. I head towards the section of the library I always do. The fantasy section. All my favorite books are there. Harry Potter, Fablehaven, the list goes on. Avery heads the other way, to the nonfiction book shelves. Eww, nonfiction. It was always too boring for me. But ignoring the thought, I sit down next to a shelf and scan the books. I pick out one that seems interesting.

After ten minutes of reading, I hear my bus being called over the PA. I put the book away and begin walking out the door. In the corner of my eye I see Avery waving to me. I turn around and wave back.

Does Avery think I'm not an idiot?
