The career that I have chosen, is actually two careers in one. I decided that at this point in my life I have many skills in the same range of careers. I realized that since I revel in so many different careers, I may as well go into a field that I can do more than one thing I enjoy. The two careers I have chosen are to become an artist, and to become a translator. These two jobs involve many things that I like to do daily. Becoming an artist lets me be creative and get paid for doing what I love, while being a translator lets me use my skills of being trilingual and allows me to have a larger range of people whom I could work with. I look forward to being able to enjoy my life in a career that suits me and my preferences.
Here in Pittsburgh the top 5 job markets are: Healthcare, Insurance, Hospitality/Restaurant, Customer Service, and Retail. However Art/Media are a big part of the job industry as well. In the career I'd like to go in, I don't have to move to be able to be successful. Luckily I can work in an office or at home, it's whatever I prefer to do. Also people need translators everywhere considering the the whole world has race diversity. I researched statistics and got information from careerplanner.com that the employment of translators is estimated to increase 24 percent over the 2006-16 decade. This is much faster than the average for all the other occupations. The reason that translators are becoming needed more and more is because of increase of international diversity and the increase in the number of foreign language speakers in the United States. As for the art side of my career choice, the job outlook is very average. About 6% increase in jobs.
Since I'm choosing two careers, I have two Industries. In my art industry I'll be making things. In art careers there's a lot more than just creating though. You get to manage other people, teach people your ways of doing things, critique, etc. However for the most part I'd be creating my own art. As for the translating part of my career I would be in a service providing Industry. People are in need of translators because companies are becoming interracial but there is still a language barrier. By providing people with a way to communicate with each other, it will help get more people hired and support people to work better with each other.
There is a very wide range of salaries in art since there are so many different branches in the art field. You can go from a low salary to a very high salary. Depending on which field you go into decides how much many you'll make. I would like to go into the Multimedia Artists and Animators field which receives one of the highest yearly salaries out of the common art branches. If I was successful in getting into that field, I would make an annual salary of about $63,630. The lowest 10% received $35,510, (Which is without experience or a high degree in the field.) and the highest 10% received $112,030. As for a translator field, your pay is based off of where you use your skill. You get paid the highest amount for being an interpreter/translator in the army. You get a monthly pay of $1,787 to $2,015 per month. But I won't be go into the army however. For normal translators in the business field (ones that are working for companies) the median pay is $52,370. The lowest 10% made $22,240 and the highest 10% made more than $80,650. Both careers have very flexible schedules which leads to a less stressful work environment, which is something I'd really like to be in. If I'm in these fields I don't think I'd need to be in a union since the pay for both is pretty much based on your education and skill in the job. Statistics in this paragraph are from The Bureau of Labor Statistics and money.usnews.com.
The job that I'm going to do will honestly not take that much of physical labor. A translator usually just sits with a group of people for 30-60 minutes in a room to translate what the person who doesn't speak the native language is saying. This does not take much effort on your mind and I think it could honestly be relaxing. However, since I want to become a manga artist, there is a lot of stress put onto you. You have to meet deadlines, meet with editors, fix what they say is wrong, etc. I think it will take some mental preparation and might cause some stress, but I don't think it will take a toll on my body nor will it take a lot of physical labor. I'm pretty sure I can deal with some stress, because what job doesn't involve stress?
The technology involved in my careers are mainly computers. For manga art though, there is a technology called a Wacom tablet. This tablet allows you do draw digitally instead of traditionally. It really helps with manga because you can manage your time a lot better through using a Wacom tablet. In translating, I don't see much technology used since you're using your own knowledge of the language to translate what people are saying. Advancements in technology in the future most likely will benefit my art career but might negatively impact my translating career. As of right now there aren't any digital translators that correctly translate what someone is saying, but if technology advances enough to the point that computers could just translate what people are saying, the need for translators will decline drastically.
There isn't many classes during high school that can help me be prepared for manga arts, but any art class could help me improve on my range of skills in art, other than that it won't help very much unless art colleges are looking for drawing classes... which they probably will. For colleges, I know I'm going to need to have a course taken in manga studies if I want to be hired in the manga field. I will be taking this course at Florida International University or FIU. and a degree is not always required for a translator, but most employers prefer an applicant who holds a bachelor's degree with some formal coursework in interpreting. I don't know anyone right now who is in either field that I would like to go into, so I don't have anyone close to me that I can get helpful tips or get insight on the job from sadly, so I don't have anyone who could mentor me.
I really have the feeling I could be successful in these fields because I've enjoyed learning languages for a long time now and I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon. I really want to try and get to the top and make a lot of money doing what I love. I love being able to communicate with people that have different cultures than me, and I appreciate being blessed with the talent of art and I want people to see my work and enjoy it. After researching so much about both these careers, I really want to work to get to that 10% of people that get paid more than average. And having to do a manga course in college really does not bother me at all, in fact, I'm excited for it!
After learning a bunch of new things about these careers and seeing the job outlooks, the job markets for my careers, the pay, and education needed, I still really want to get into this career choice. I think it'll be tough, but really exciting, and I'm looking forward to doing what I enjoy most.
