He stands on a hill panting, his hot breath warms the frosty air as it leaves his mouth. He watches over his territory, his home, his world.
Everything he loves, his pack, is down below the hill.
He looks up at the huge, white moon sailing through the night sky, not cloud dares creep in front of it. He breathes, exhaling in a low, long howl. It is soon joined with the harmony of others.
They sing the song of wolves, a soft, sad melody.
He runs down the hill, yipping to his family that he has returned. They greet him with licks and whines, their protector, their leader, their alpha, is home.
He walks with his mate to their den, he licks her muzzle as they lay down, ready to sleep. Before he does, he looks out at the sky, the stars twinkle, a cold wind blows. He rests his head on his paws and sleeps.
BANG, CRACK, " C'MON BOYS, WE GOT HER TRAIL" the hunters yell as they follow the deer. The wolf watches, silent as the humans barrel like bison through the snow covered woods.
He is following them, curiosity blooming in his chest as he runs, excited by the smell of blood, the deer was hit.
" Well, ain't she a beauty, bag her up, let's take her back. We should get quite a reward for her." The wolf quietly pads around the men and their kill, the deer fell moments ago, her eyes closing as the last breath shudders from her chest. He goes in for a closer look.
" HEY HEY! JOE, JOE!" The man readies his gun, the wolf growls low in his chest. He leaps.
CRACK!
A pain swallows him as he is knocked back, into the ground. The men leave, muttering about a close call
Blood stains his beautiful white fur as he lays dying in the snow
His pack is safe, his mate will be fine. Stories will be told of the great alpha, the one who started this pack.
He closes his eyes as it all fades into black. His body sighs as he lets out his final breath, the warmth leaving his body.
The great alpha, the leader, the protector, is dead.
