Score is 1-1 at 117 minutes, nobody wanted the game to go into the dreaded penalty shootout, but if nobody scored in the next 3 minutes they were going to have to decide the winner of the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals by penalties.
Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer cleared the ball, finding Mario Gotze. Gotze outsmarted his marker and delivered a smart through ball to Reus. Now all that Reus had to do was get past Spain's center-back, Sergio Ramos. But getting past him wasn't going to be easy, he is the world's best defender along with Brazil's Thiago Silva. Reus executed a perfect step-over to fool Ramos and started running at breakneck speed and he was clearly outpacing Ramos. Then, Spain's goalkeeper, David De Gea rushed out of his goalpost and charged at Reus.
Immediately, the referee blew his whistle to indicate a penalty. Reus should have been celebrating, really. He had won his team a penalty at 119 minutes, with 1 minute to go. But he couldn't celebrate. Instead, he was clutching his right leg and moaning in pain.
Reus was injured.
