Chapter 1: Pajamas and Guns
"Are you sure you know what you're doing Emma? You could get in big trouble for this!" "Quiet Lindsey! I know what I'm doing!" Whispered Emma. "Fine, but its your fault if we get in trouble!" Said Lindsey. Emma balanced on one shaky leg as she stretched to grab the pot off of the counter. Her chair was wobbling ominously, as if it would fall at any second. Just as she was about to reach it, the lights flickered on, and a booming voice spoke, "What are you girls doing?" They had been caught red handed, trying to sneak extra cookies after bed time by their Pa! "It was her idea!" Lindsey, the younger eight year old, quickly said as she pointed to her older sister Emma, who was the older ten year old, and the trouble maker! Their father then picked up little Lindsey, and mounted her on his shoulder. "I'm sure it was! But you need to learn better! Don't follow your sister around! Especially at ten at night! You two should be in bed!" Her Pa said. "Now off to bed with you two rascals! Before the bear wakes up!" He laughed as he lowered Lindsey down to her feet. "Okay." They both moaned. "Hey! If you stop griping I'll read you a story! Go get your pajamas on! I'll be up in a second, need to check on work." He crowed as he walked to the kitchen. The two girls clambered up the stairs, and pulled on their green laced pajamas. They then climbed into their beds, and waited for their Pa to read them a story. Emma rolled upside down, and hung her head off the bed until her long red hair spread out on the floor. She whispered, "Have you ever noticed that Pa is always checking on work? It's as if he's more interested in his job then us!" "Well," Lindsey chimed in,"He's a good writer. He tells us the amazing stories he writes! Mabye he's getting a new..." Suddenly, a loud CRACK cut Lindsey off. Then a heart stopping thud shook the whole house! There was a moment of painstaking silence, then there were then two shorter cracking noises! Emma whipped off her covers, and bounded to the stairs. She cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted "Pa! What happened?" There was no response for several moments. "Pa?" She repeated. She then heard footsteps coming her way. She saw shadows of two mysterious people, and it all made since. "Hide." She whispered to her sister, as she bolted under the bed. She was soon joined by her sister. "What happened? What was that noise?" Her sister cried, with a worried expression on her face. Knowing that her sister wouldn't be able to live with the truth, Emma said, "Pa just fell, and knocked over the pot. He's okay!" She said hurriedly as the footsteps became louder. "We'll then why are we hiding?" Asked her sister with a questioning look on her face. Emma didn't answer. "Emma tell me the truth now, or I will get out from under here!" She said threateningly. Emma sighed and said, "Fine, did you hear those loud noises?" Lindsey nodded, with a worried look on her face. "Well did you hear those loud noises?" Her sister nodded worriedly. " We'll, two strange men broke into our house, and.... And...." She took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes. "I think they shot our parents." "WHAT?!" Cried Lindsey! The two men had just got up the stairs. One had a raspy voice, and he said, "We know you're here! We're gonna do the same thing we did to your parents!" The other had a very deep voice, who spoke, "we gonna play this like a game of hide and seek!" "Won't that be fun!" The first said as he ransacked the room. "I'll go first! 1... 2..." He took a step towards the bed. "3... 4..." The other followed. "5... 6..." Emma heard them pull something out of their jackets, then spied two pistols in their gnarled hands. "7... 8..." They cocked their guns, and were at the bed. "9... 10..." They aimed under the empty bed. The first robber looked to the stairs just as the little girls vanished down them. Emma and Lindsey heard them tripping over themselves to get down the stairs, and cursing at each other. That's when they saw their parents lying on the ground, in a pool of blood. It was too much for Lindsey, and she fell to the ground, face in her hands. She started weeping, and screamed, "Pa! Ma! Wake up!" The pursuers were closing the gap between them! "Lindsey COME ON!" She screamed as she grabbed her sister by the collar of the shirt! "NO! NO! I WANT TO BE BACK WITH MA AND PA!" She cried! That made Emma cry even worse, but she kept dragging her sister. We'll be safe in the kitchen! Quick come on!" She cried as she tugged at her sister's shirt. As they reached the kitchen, she looked for a hiding spot. A voice in her head screamed, "Look at the pantry!" She heeded the command, and looked at the tall pantry. It stretched from the ceiling to the floor. Perfect for hiding, she thought. She grabbed her sister by the shoulders, and looked her in the eye. She desperately tried to cam her enough to get her into the pantry. "Lindsey, we are going to be okay! We are Harrises! We are strong!" Lindsey kept snuffling, but stared up at her sister with blood-shot eyes. "But now, we must save ourselves!" She wiped a tear from her sister's eye. "Now we must hide in here! Come now!" She said pulling her sister to the pantry. She shoved her in, and managed to squeeze herself in as well, but she still wasn't sure if they'd make it out alive, for the hunters were right here in their home. Emma didn't think they were leaving anytime soon.
