The music blared loudly through the speakers as a new song played one after another. I sat in the corner, slowly sipping my coke and watched the people dance on the dance floor not seeming bothered by all of the sexual tension in the room.
"C'mon, Savannah! You need to learn to breathe a little. You can't sit in a corner forever." my best-friend Darcy says and I can instantly tell that she's had too much to drink by the look in her eyes.
I shake my head. "I'm fine. Just let me know when you're ready to go because I'm not letting you drive in your condition." She giggles and drains the rest of the contents in her cup before walking away, almost tripping on her heels. I sigh and glance at my watch. It was already after midnight and all I wanted to do was go home. I lean against the wall and close my eyes, regretting agreeing to come to this party.
"Tired?" My eyes fly open and I turn my head slightly to find a guy who looked my age or maybe a year or two older, his dark hair falling in his face; his electric blue eyes piercing.
I shake my head, biting my lip. Why was this guy talking to me? Couldn't he tell I wanted to be left alone?
"What's your name?" He looks at me, something passing through his eyes.
I frown. I definitely didn't trust this guy. Everything about him seemed...off. Instead of telling him my real name, I opt for lying. "I'm Darcy," I smile at him. I felt bad for putting my best-friend's name out there like that but I didn't know what else to say. You know self-preservation and all that.
He nods, taking a swig from his cup. "No offense but this doesn't seem like your type of place."
"Don't judge a book by it's cover," I state dryly. I take a step away from him and scan the crowd of mingled bodies and smoke, attempting but failing to look for Darcy without having to make it obvious.
But to my dismay, he notices. "Looking for someone?" He raises an eyebrow, intrigued. Not seeing a way out of this one, I nod.
"Came with my friend." He gives a slight nod and I swallow hard. I felt uncomfortable having him next to me and I still didn't know why he came to talk to me anyway. Just as I'm about to walk away, Darcy stumbles up, holding her cup high in the air.
"Heyyy girl...where ya been?" She smiles and then realizes Abe. She raises her eyebrows. "Who's this hottie?"
Abe grins, pleased. "The name's Abe. What's yours?"
She moves to stand closer to him, nearly falling. "Darcy," He glances over at me, eyebrows raised. I smile sheepishly, waving slightly.
He looks back down at Darcy. "And your friend?" He points his thumb back at me. My eyes widen and I speak before Darcy gets the chance to open her mouth.
"No!" I yell. I did not want him to know my name. "My name isn't important. My friend and I are just going to leave and you have a nice time..."
Darcy pouts, spilling some of her alcohol. "But I wanna talk to Abe," She slurs. I sigh, rubbing my eyes tiredly.
"Darcy, I really have to get home and besides, you can't drive." She rolls her eyes.
"You are such a party pooper! Sometimes I wonder why I even call you my bestfriend. Because you're starting to act more and more like my mother!" She says angrily, glaring at me.
I blink, shocked. I couldn't believed she actually said that to me. I mean, my bad for caring about her and not wanting her to drive under the influence and possibly get into an accident. It wasn't my fault that she constantly put me in positions where I had to play babysitter. But, if she didn't want my help, then she didn't have to have it.
"Really, Darce? Because as I see it, you need to grow up and stop acting like a child! You never think about the consequences your actions have but I do! I plan on going somewhere in life and being the good friend I am, I try to help you so you won't go do something stupid. But I'm done playing babysitter! You don't want my help? Fine. But you are going to let me take you home." I fold my arms over my chest, infuriated. I hated it when Darcy got like this.
She rolls her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever, mom."
I pull her by the forearm and glance back at Abe. "Sorry for leaving so quickly. I'm sure you understand, right?"
He studies me for a moment before answering, "Why don't you want me to know your name?"
I bite my lip. "A name is a very powerful thing, Abe. A name can say everything about a person and also say so little. But, if you're really that curious, I'm sure a resourceful man like you could find it out for himself."
I grin at him before dragging Darcy out of the house and putting her in the passenger side of the car. She groans, holding her stomach.
"I think I'm gonna be sick." She leans out of the car and throws up and I cringe. When she's down, she wipes her mouth and closes the door back as I start the car and begin to drive away from the party.
"Look, Savannah, I'm sorry for what I said back--" I hold up a hand, cutting her off.
"It doesn't matter, Darce. But at least have the balls enough to tell me that you meant it."
