An unsteady wheeze resonates through the air. A sudden gasp rings about me. A pant surrounds the small field, which was in the school parking lot. Doubt fills my incredulous mind as my measly team struggled to complete a half a mile jog. The voices in my head echoed my deepest darkest worries. Will we be good enough? Will we make it? Will our team be a success? My head burned with the intense desire to foretell the future of my soccer team, which looked grim.
Loudly, my coach's voice penetrated my cranium destroying the dam of hesitation, as though a flood was beginning to roar. The thoughts escaped leaving an aching feeling in my stomach, which hurt with all the doubt. The rest of the practice, I devoted myself to the drills easily surpassing my teammates in the area of ball control and shooting, since I had practiced. Dispersedly, in a quick scrimmage, I scored nine goals. I instinctively dodged, weaved, and twisted my way into the bowels of the enemy line. The exhaust port of the evil galactic space station The Death Star, within sight. As I released my 2010 Adidas Jabulani World Cup Soccer Ball-shaped proton torpedoes, a voice said, "Use the force Luke", And "let go Luke." Hurriedly, I scored again.
My teammates stopped and watched as I took the ball down the field. Standing and gawking , they offered no resistance as I approached the 12 x 6 socketed aluminum soccer goal posts. Desperately, I felt sick as I was quickly reminded by the coach that none of us would not be able to make a Mauldin Hhigh Sschool team. My heart slowly started sinking as the reality set in. We were terrible! We needed a miracle. Working hard was the only option. We worked and worked. On multiple occasions I returned home bloody and bruised but we worked as a team. Working my hardest was the only option.
The day of the first game, I worked hard to practice all I had learned. Since we were positive we were going to win, we tried our best. However, we did not "win". The second, third, fourth, and fifth games were like that. Practicing did not seem to help. We got creamed without putting up a fight. We returned to the practice field tired and dejected. We had to prove to ourselves that we could play as a team, which felt like a big accomplishment. Although, our scores for the next eight games showed our improvement, we still did not win. However we did not lose by a landslide. As we practiced more and more, our team got better and better. We worked as a team.
The last game arrived quicker than I thought. We warmed up. We practiced. We trained. We conquered. We had our first and last win of the season. On the last game we scored ten goals as opposed to our adversary's one. We actually won. We practiced, practiced, practiced, and practiced, we worked as a team and we won.
