Tragedy

In the world, everyone has their own struggles. Some more so than others. Some more conspicuous than others. Usually those who face glaringly obvious conditions such as destitution. There are those with family issues. Estranged parents, or perhaps illness striking upon a family member - maybe financial problems will arise too. Murder, rape, theft. Atrocities like these befalling someone, or that person's loved ones, are also seemingly prolific nowadays. How many more examples of suffering to such large extents can be thought of?

Tragedies, people say. I think not. Not to say they are not tragic - they most definitely are. But true suffering comes from within. The scars of the skin heal easily with time. The pain of those scars, at least. To heal the damage to the mind is another matter. Attacks to the mind inflict the greatest damage, and recovery is never certain.

People are all individually unique, and have different tolerances to the mental damage they can take. Some crack easily. Even if they are tough, waves will still erode away rocks eventually.

Suicide is a tragic masterpiece. To, perhaps, finally feel alive in death. A beautiful melancholy, is it not? Humans have such a way with art. Truly a tragedy.

What is a tragedy anyway? It is not just something tragic, it's more than that. Most people think of someone jumping off a building, hanging themselves, overdosing on drugs, or maybe jumping into a pool of water to drown, when they think of suicide. It isn't always one of those movie deaths.

Suicide is when one kills oneself, is it not? Tragedies are the cases whereby that is completely and utterly inevitable. Especially when the person has to walk down a long, single path, that can only be his or her only option. A path that remains for him or her, regardless of circumstances. Whereby the actions of any other person, or any other external forces for that matter, cannot, and will not deter him or her from continuing down that road. In essence, an inevitable path to doom.

Most will still fail to comprehend this. No, even the inhumanity of rape and murder are not tragedies. Most of the time, they are unavoidable for the victims. How is it that those aren't tragedies as well? Simply put - it had nothing to do with them as a person - their character, personality, the essence that makes them who they are - that led to the tragic incident. It is when the inherent flaws - which may only be deemed flaws in unlikely and unfortunate situations - lead to the downfall of a man - now that, is what a tragedy is.
