The Secrets of Kathy Jean

Chapter one: The Visit

I arrived after what felt like a lifetime. The trip had been full of radio static and long, boring back roads. I arrived at Gentle Springs Nursing Home at precisely 1:45. My grandmother was waiting for me in her favorite antique rocking chair as she always does when she expect my visits. My grandmother usually enjoys sharing stories from her youth with me,I don't mind it much, as it's usually rather entertaining. She greeted me with a kiss on the cheek and a warm smile. She then said "How is my favorite grandson? I haven't seen you in so long." I explained to her that college has been taking it's tole on me, and I keep falling asleep during classes. She said that I probably wasn't getting enough sleep at night, and drinking tea before bed may help. About fifteen more minutes went by of discussing my college life before my grandmother began her stories as usual. She told me about her time as a waitress in a local diner, and when she met my grandfather. The story that stood out the most was the one of her time at summer camp as a young girl. She explained that the counselors there never payed much attention to the children and teens who attended the camp. This usually caused the attendees many problems, and gave them too much freedom. My grandmother then got a unreadable expression on her face, and when I asked her what was wrong she didn't answer. I eventually got her to finish the story, although the ending of the story wasn't what I expected. According to my grandmother, the attendees and the counselors were murdered that summer. They were supposedly killed using a garden hose and a dull kitchen knife. When I asked her who did it she replied with, "Kathy Jean.", I was told only last week by my aunt that Kathy Jean was my grandmother's real name before she changed it at the age of 25. Needless to say,I found better things to do in my free time than visit my grandmother.
