Francis was trying to run after the last bandit, who had just attacked his wife. 'Let him go, the guards will catch him.' Mary said. Francis turned around and saw his beautiful wife standing there, this creature, this creature which his God had given to him, she was so beautiful. Every time Francis looked at her, he remembered why life was worth living, he remembered all their happy moments, and how lucky he was to have her by his side. Until he felt a sharp pain.

Francis fell on the ground, feeling paralyzed through out his whole body. Mary came running to him, looking very concerned. 'Francis? Francis!' She said. Mary sat down next to Francis' body. Francis looked very pale and sick. 'Your head, can you hear me?' Mary said ' The king has been injured, get help. Now!' She yelled at the guard. 'We're going to get back to the carriage and going to get back to the castle. You're going to be alright.' Mary said. He started to look even paler and said: 'No I won't. 'Francis?' Mary asked worried. 'We were meant to be happy, and we were but, I have another fate predicted long ago' Francis answered. Mary started panicking and said: 'Nonononono, we were given a second chance!' 'Maybe there is no magic, but what we make for ourselves.' Francis said. 'But Delphine...' Mary said. 'No, no more. Please make sure that my son is cared for and that he knows that I loved him. Promise me that you'll stay in France, until the future king... Until he is safe and my mother is secured as regent' Francis said. Mary started crying: 'Please Francis, don't leave me' 'Mary, promise me. Promise me you'll stay.' Francis answered. 'I will, I will, I promise.' Mary replied. Francis started to look at the sky: ' I see such beauty, such beauty you've brought me. You must... You must wed again. You must love again' 'I can't. I will never... I will never love anyone the way I love you' Mary's answered while she was crying. 'I pray to God that you do'. That's when Francis' body turned lifeless.

The guards and Catherine came. They saw Mary sitting there, in shock, while still holding Francis' hand. Catherine walked to her and said: 'Mary?' Mary said: 'No' 'That isn't Francis, he's gone.' Catherine said. 'I can't let him go.' Mary concluded. 'Let go and hold on to me.' Catherine said. Mary let her hand slip of Francis' hand and grabbed Catherine's. The guards grabbed Francis body and started walking back to their horses. Until Mary saw Francis' finger move, at least, she thought it did. Mary stood up and yelled: 'When you get back to the castle, fetch a physician and put Francis back in our bed!' The guards and Catherine protested but Mary yelled: 'By order of the queen of France!'

Catherine and Mary were back in the carriage. Mary was staring out of the window, looking very depressed. 'Mary, I know it's hard to accept but...' Catherine said. Mary turned her face to her : 'I know he is still alive, I know it.' Catherine tried to say something but Mary turned her face back and was staring out of the window once again.

The ride back to the castle was long and silent. They both were in their own minds. Catherine was silently crying about her loss, while Mary was still staring and thinking about Francis' fight for his life right now. Mary grew impatient and started to get irritated by the speed of the carriage. Mary yelled to the driver: 'Driver, accelerate please, I need to see my husband as soon as possible!' Catherine sighed, knowing that Mary couldn't accept the fact that Francis was gone.
