Sebastian POV
I opened my eyes to the stale stench of cigarette smoke and the bright rays of the scorching sun. I must remember to buy blinds for the windows. Wincing once again at the bright sunlight that now flooded my apartment, I got off the couch and opened the windows to let the smoke stench out. Just then a knock resounded at the door, making me frown. I despised early morning visitors, especially Catherine. It seemed that she had taken an oath to interfere in every aspect of my life, and as much as I have told her to stay away, she sticks to me all the more!
I open the door reluctantly, and sure enough Catherine stands there, with coffee in one hand and freshly bought groceries in the other. I am almost thankful she is not empty-handed, atleast it prevented her from launching a full blown exaggerated only-Catherine-can-pull-this-hug hug at me! The groceries did not however, hid her excitement, as she hopped from one foot to another. I rolled my eyes at her excitement. Jeez, get a grip girl! Reluctantly, I move aside to let her in because although Catherine was as annoying as she was, she was also tenacious which means that if I slam the door at her face right now, she would probably continue knocking till the door would hang loose at its hinges!
"Good...good morning, Sebastian," she stammers, while offering me the cup of coffee. I snort and grasp the coffee. Taking a sip of the scalding liquid, I almost spit it all out.
"As if my morning could be any good with you here," I remark, but it does nothing to make Catherine uncomfortable, remember what I said about her tenacity!
"How's coffee? I bought it from the best coffee shop in Paris!"
"It's the worst drink I've ever had," I retort but drain the cup dry nevertheless to ease the spreading headache of my hangover.
"Why don't you freshen up while I prepare your breakfast?" she continues ignoring my obvious irritation.
Breakfast huh, now why does that word sound so foreign to my ears! And that's when I realize that I've never had a proper breakfast in my life. I've never had a proper meal for that matter! What I eat is simply food, not breakfast, lunch or dinner for I have never had a family to make that food a meal. And now as I see Catherine standing before me, I can't help but think of her as family! She was like that annoying and irritating distant cousin of mine who never existed, even though she'd probably murder me in cold blood if she came to know how I felt about her! Apparently half of the male population of our college would do anything to get on her good terms, not me however, for I did not know what those morons saw in her!
She was pretty no doubt. With her golden locks cascading down to her hips and her wild green eyes, she was tempting, however when she opened her mouth, everything went down the drain! I would be lying if I say I was not attracted to her initially, but then she opened her mouth and it took all of my patience not to punch her square in the jaw. She was taunting and high on attitude and all I could say to her back then was, "Back off, whore!"
It was then that she decided to make my life a living hell! She followed me everwhere, no, she stalked me everywhere, even to the men's washroom! No wonder I've had enough of her, I mean which girl barges into the men's washroom just to ask the reason for my ignorance towards her "true love". That's Catherine Hawke for you.
Leaving her alone to her breakfast preparations, I contemplate whether or not to take a shower. Deciding that I could really use a shower, I pick my towel off the couch and head right into the bathroom.
As the warm water poured down my torso, I could feel myself relax, my stiff muscles loosening to the warmth. I stood under the warm water for another ten minutes, before Catherine began banging the bathroom door. I swear I cannot get a minute of solace in my own home! Not bothering to reply to her consistent knocking on the door, I continued to stand under the water, letting its warmth work its magic on me.
The knocking ceased and I could not have been happier! I would have continued to stand under the shower if my instincts wouldn't have been telling me to step out of the bathroom immediately. I had learned the hard way, not to ignore my instincts and right now, I was filled with a sense of foreboding, as if something was terribly wrong.
Stepping out of the bathroom, I found nothing amiss. Everything seemed normal and yet I could not get that gnawing feeling out of my head. Taking another two cautious steps into the room, I finally let my guard down. However, I was still a little ill at ease. My instincts had never been wrong and even now, even with my guard down I could not brush off the sick feeling sitting in the bottom of my stomach.
Putting on a white tank and blue denim jeans, I had yet another premonition. The eerie silence of my apartment added to that presentment was making me more paranoid every passing second. Wait a second! Did I just say eerie silence? How can it ever be quiet with Catherine around and this deafening silence could only mean one thing. Oh no! Catherine is kidnapped! It must have been while I was happily taking the shower, some thugs might have entered the apartment thinking of robbing someone in these palatial apartments and having found nothing else they would have kidnapped Catherine, thinking they would be able to trade their way into riches through her! I had to stop them before they take her too far!
Rushing out of my room and into the dining, I stopped short to see Catherine still bent over the gas stove cooking pancakes. I had never felt more relief before to see her as much as I felt right now. as if feeling my presence, she looked up and smiled, "I made you some pancakes. "
And instead of my normal sarcastic comeback, I simply smiled back at her and thanked her for the meal. She looked surprised, almost as if she was witnessing a miracle. But then she started clapping and giggling with joy, and all the warmth I had felt for her just a moment ago evaporated!
Digging into my pancakes, I started ignoring Catherine again. She was babbling something about us getting together and how perfect we'd look and all Catherine rubbish! I was more concentrated on my surroundings.I had been exceptionally edgy today and till now nothing looked suspicious to me.
"So what do you think?", my thoughts were interrupted by Catherine's sudden question. She looked exasperated when I gave her my clueless look.
"I said that I was thinking if you would like to help me for my biology project?", she explained. Feeling rather annoyed and not in the mood to argue anymore, I simply nodded. Almost immediately, she lunged out of the chair and onto me, hugging me and kissing me all over my face.
"Thank you so so so soo much, I swear Ryan you won't regret even a second of being with me. Thank you so much, you're the best!", she said as she continued kissing the rest of my face.
"Yeah I know!", I mumbled.
I was going to shove her off me when a sudden realization came to my mind. Did she just call me by my actual name? How does she know? I never told her my name!
"Catherine....Why did you just call me Ryan?", I asked, voicing my earlier thoughts. A flicker of recognition crossed on her face as she realized her mistake. She opened her mouth to say something, but then thinking better of it, closed her mouth and looked down.
"How the hell do you know my actual name, Catherine? ", I yelled at her as she continued to look down. She looked back up, a sadness covering her face now.
"I didn't want to do this, but you left me no choice!", she replied and before I could ask what she meant, her fist connected with my jaw, pushing me off my chair and onto the ground! Damn, I had never been punched this hard before! I could hardly feel my face, except my jaw that was throbbing so hard I could swear it was broken. I saw her again, she was kneeling beside me now, looking down on me with no more empathy in her eyes, all the sadness from before, vanished!
"Goodnight Ryan!", were the last words she whispered in my ears, before she punched me in my skull again, knocking me out to sweet oblivion.
