Darkness was the first thing he could remember. When he tried opening his eyes, he was greeted by more darkness.
He knew nothing. Only his name. Not his age, height, or interests. Heck, he didn't even know what he looked like anymore.
And then there was a flicker of light above him. A lamp lit the dark space up and he could finally see. He was in a very small room... an elevator perhaps? His question was answered when two doors slid open, revealing a long hallway which at the end had a type of little Japanese garden. Plants, a small stream and rocks filled the small area and in front of it stood a tall girl dressed in black and purple. Her long, black hair fell just over her shoulders, complimenting her beautiful features, and a white streak decorated her bangs.
Then everything came rushing to him. Memories of his life. Seeing colours and objects for the first time as a baby, taking his first steps with the age of two, going to kindergarten and meeting new kids, primary school, and then seeing his little brother after he was born. A little pudgy baby with blonde tufts of hair who grew up to be a wonderful, well mannered boy. He and his brother looked so much alike, only their hair colour was completely different. He had their mother's black hair and his brother their father's blonde hair.
One cold day in the middle of winter, the brothers went out to the frozen lake to go ice skating. The ice was thick enough to walk on so they saw no problem with skating on it. He taught his brother how to stand on the ice with his skates without falling over, then he learned how to move by himself. And before they both knew it, his brother was skating like he'd been doing it for years. That's when it all went down hill. The ice began cracking and it gave way under his brother's weight. He began crying for help and he rushed to his brother's side, grabbing his hand and trying to pull him out of the icey cold water only to have hismelf pulled in as well. His brother kept thrashing around and screaming, desperately trying to stay above the water since he couldn't swim. "Don't worry! Calm down, I'll get you out of here!" He said as he dived into the freezing cold water and tried pushing his brother upwards to get him out. But the sibling took too long. He needed air so desperately, but he couldn't let his brother go otherwise he'll fall straight in again.
The air he'd been holding left his lips and he felt his energy leave him. With one last push he heaved his brother up, using the last of his energy. His brother made it out, but wet and cold. But once he realised his big brother wasn't anywhere to be seen, he cried amd screamed, peering into the hile where ice used to be bwfore it cracked. There was no sign of him. Water and fragments of ice filled his lungs and he sank to the bottom of the lake before his sight went entirely black.
Damien was dead.
The girl in front of him gave him a quick bow before someone beside him grunted. A man who looked to be in his twenties and dressed in a black suit stood in front of a second elevator right next to the one had Damien exited just then. "Where the hell are we?"
Damien tried his best not to show any signs of distress. He was dead, so why was he here? What was this place anyway?
"Thank you for coming. Follow me, please." The girl turned and walked around a corner and the man followed. Damien hesitated though, but went after them anyway. Once he turned the corner,he entered a room and he stopped. In the room, there was a bar and on the left was a big hall, a beautiful and huge chandelier hung from the ceiling. The view was magnificent. Even the bar had stained glass between shelves of bottles of alcohol. A man stood behind the counter, arms at his sides and a stoic expression glued to his face.
"Thank you for coming. Welcome to Quindecim. I am your bartender Decim. Please come take a seat."
The man who was next to him by the elevators sat himself at the bar and Damien reluctantly did the same. The girl was already next Decim, getting a glass from a cabinet under the counter. "What can I get you to drink?" She asked and the man immediately asked for a beer. When she turned to Damien, he shook his head. "I'm fine, thanks." She nodded and served the man beside him his beer. Decim was cleaning a glass before he looked straight at the males. Only then did Damien realise that Decim's irises had a light blue colour shaped like a cross. He had to admit, they were quite stunning.
"Well, now that you're both here, I'd like to ask both of you a question. Do you remember the means in which you used to get here?"
"I recall being on my way to work, but it's all a blur after that." The man shrugged and Damien gulped nervously as Decim's eyes landed on him. "And you?"
"I-I, uh..." Damien didn't know what to say. Should he tell them that he remembers dying? Or should he act like he has no idea?
"Do you remember how you got here?" The girl peered at him and he looked away, a drop of sweat running down his forhead. He finally spoke up after a while of debating whether he should tell them or not. "I don't understand. Why am I here in the first place? I'm dead, aren't I?"
Decim's eyes visibly widened and the tall girl gasped. "How...?"
"I knew something was different." Decim moved to the other side of the bar and picked a telephone up, placing it to his ear and pressing a couple of buttons. A moment of silence went by before Decim spoke into it. "I am terribly sorry for bothering you, but we have a problem with one of the guests." He glanced back at Damien as he listend to what the person at the other end had to say. "Understood." He put the receiver back and turned to the others. The man next to Damien stared at him as if he'd seen a ghost and Decim walked over to him. "I am sorry for the inconvenience. Please forgive me." He quickly filled a glass with a dark coloured liquid and placed it infront of Damien. He raised an eyebrow at Decim and asked, "What's this?"
"I am terribly sorry that you remember that you have passed on. So please accept this as an apology."
Damien sighed and picked the glass up, ignoring the stares from the man sat beside him. He studied the thick, green liquid but took a sip despite the doubts he had.
And with that, Damien's body went limp and he slumped against the counter, the glass falling out of his hand and dropping onto the counter. The last thing he saw before he fell asleep was Decim talking to the girl who looked like she too had seen a ghost. He then turned to the limp body of Damien and without any expression he whispered, "I am terribly sorry."
What the hell did Decim make him drink?
