What was the first word that popped up in your head when you hear the word "Change"?

For me, it's fear.

I'm that type of person who likes to stay in their comfort zone. I can't adapt quickly.

And the thought that you're going through something different from what you normally do, that you know nothing about, and it could be life-changing, woah.

That scares me.

I was laying down on our family's sofa, playing my trusty DS 'cause yeah I'm a nerd (what are you going to do about it). Well, our "family" was pretty much my mom and I for the last ten years. Oh, and I'm 16.

My parents got divorced one month after my 6th birthday. I... guess they waited. Even though I noticed that my mom and dad fought a lot, I really didn't think of it as a huge problem. Okay, maybe I'm a bit dense, but mom and dad always said that every problem always has an answer. And every problem can be solved. I really held on to that, and I thought that my parents' bickering will definitely get solved. They'll find an answer.

The sad thing is, their answer was different from what I had in mind.

Okay. Where was I? Oh, right. Pokemon.

Whilst I was in the Pokemon League, struggling on defeating the champion, mom went out of her room to have a glass of water. She sat on the same sofa after nudging me to sit instead of laying on my back. Mom put down the glass on the coffee table in front and faced my way.

Usually, when mom is going to make a big announcement, she would do it that way. But I just ignore her at most times. It's probably something big, but unnecessary. Like getting a pup.

"Gwyneth, Mommy decided to get married."

I stopped playing and looked at mom, raising an eyebrow. "Really?" Honestly, mom never showed that she was getting closer with someone special, so I was surprised. She smiled and chuckled, "Yeah. I hope that's fine?"

"Uhm, it's fine! Sorry, I was a little startled." I continued on; "But, are you sure he's the one? I mean-"

"It's fine, Gwen sweetie." Mom quickly interrupted my mumbling. "James is a good person. Trust me on this one. Okay?"

...James? I let out a soft sigh. "Okay."

Mom pecked me on the forehead and headed back to her room. I continued staring at my battle, it seemed like my Kanghaskan managed to beat their Dragonite (yeah, nerd, I know). "Oh, and Gwen?"

"Yeah?"

"We're meeting him and his son the day after tomorrow. I heard that his son is in the same school as you."

Even though I can't see her, I could've almost swore that she was grinning. Way to go mom, as if having a new dad wasn't stressful enough. I slumped down the sofa, sighing as I deliver the last blow to the champion's remaining Dragonair.

"Your mom's getting married?"

I played with my hair. "Yeah. Unexpected. What do you think, Nina?"

Nina shrugged off and turned around her chair facing me. "Well, did you just accept that?" she crossed her arms on the chair and placed her chin on them.

"I guess? Mom usually has good taste in men, so I don't have to worry." I said, twirling my hair.

"What about you?" she asked immediately.
