I hear him mutter under his breath, “Sensitive hearing what a lame excuse. I should tow her to the Principal for lying, and throw in that good for nothing new student who also came in late”

I know I’m going to regret this as I answer, “Yes Sir I do have sensitive hearing, and it is not an excuse. If you do take me to the principal he will tell you the same. May I please sit down?”

I watch as his lips pucker, and his face turns beet red. He then swallows and points me to my seat. He looks at me with the same expression you would give a cockroach before he speaks, “You will sit in the back with the other late student, and.. Dawn. I wouldn’t be late again, or there will be consequences.

“Yes Sir” I then walk along the desks seeing all the faces turning to face me. Jacqueline turning her head to give me one of her full lipped smiles before she scrunches up her auburn locks, and turns back in her seat to check her makeup.

I pass Rick who motions with his hand the neck slice before he goes back to laughing with his football buddies. Closer to the back I pass Rose who is doodling in her sketchbook. I glance at it, and get a glimpse of Rick’s face before she snaps it shut with a shy smile. She tucks her graphite pencil behind her ear. Her hair this month an electric blue with darker blue highlights; reminding me of my bionics.

She pulls out a marker, and she starts doodling on hand. Drawing different patterns. Outlining the skeletal pattern of one of her fingers and a dragon curling around the other with the flame coming out of her fingernail. “Awesome” I say, and she turns to give me a grin. Her bright neon blue contacts sparkling before she goes back to drawing.

I pass her and see that my desk neighbors will be Riley, and Him. He’s sitting in his seat with his fist curled into his neck. The leather jacket hanging behind him on the seat. I see that he is wearing a nice gray shirt that hugs his muscles just right.

I get to my desk and set my stuff down right in between both of them. Riley gives me one of his trademark eye to eye grins, and He just gives me a slight crescent smirk. I get my textbook out, and try to ignore them.

I feel a poking at my side, and recoil. I grab the syringe and take it from the hands holding it. It’s yellow with a pink top, a black bottom, and it’s...a pencil.

I see Riley staring at me waiting for his pencil back. I give an apologetic smile, and he grins taking his pencil back. I look to my other side and see that He is chuckling.

I can feel my cheeks growing red as I ask, “What’s so funny?”

He smirks as he says, “Your reaction. You acted like it was a needle”

“I don’t like things poking me that’s all”

His eyes show sorrow as he answers in a small voice, “I know” He then gives his crescent smile as he speaks again, “So what’s your name?”

I’m confused and answer, “In case you didn’t hear. I’m Dawn, but I like to go by D”

“Hi D. Im C. Short for Chip” He then winks at me as he sits back up and answers the teacher’s next question.

Chip...C. I swallow my question, and focus back on the lecture of mental health. Something I’m not sure I have right now.

I feel another poking coming from my other side, and see C giving me a cocky smile as he asks, “Why are your eyes different?”

I struggle to hold my panic and answer in a tiny voice, “I’m sorry, but you must have the wrong girl. My eyes are brown not blue”

He gives a small chuckle as he says, “I never said they were blue”
