I woke up early this morning, pretty much before anyone else did. I barely slept last night knowing that I was to be moving into my new dorm at Florida Memorial University today. I jumped up out of bed, did my hygiene, put on my FMU tshirt, some distressed high waisted shorts that showed my long, sexy legs, and some all white, high top Air Force 1s. I put loose curls into my hair and did my makeup, making sure to look extra cute so that I could break necks.
"Ci-Ciiiiii!!" screamed my mom as if I couldn't hear her.
"Carmennnn?!" I screamed back, mimicking her voice. She hates when I call her by her first name.
"Don't play with me! Come here!" she bolted back with seriousness behind her voice. I quickly walked out of my room and met her in the kitchen. "Are you all packed?" she asked.
"I've been packed and ready to go since I walked across that stage to receive my diploma!" I joked...but no seriously, I was anticipating this day for so long that I couldn't believe it was here already!
"Did you pack up all your makeup, shoes, and medi-"
"I told you I was set ma." I grumbled knowing she knows I highly dislike talking about my meds. It's only been 3 months since my grandma died but I swear it still feels like it was yesterday. She was my best friend, the one I told everything to and the one who gave me the best advice. So when she suddenly died from a heart attack, a piece of me did too. I was prescribed Trazodone which helps fight the depression I quickly began to feel not too long after she had passed. I didn't want to eat, I didn't want to drink, nor did I want to go anywhere for weeks at a time. My grandmother's passing really took a toll on me but I knew I had to be strong and go off to college with a clear mind.
"I was just checking Ciara, now watch your tone" she replied while giving me 'That Look' every angry black woman gives their child at least 100x in their life.
I quickly grabbed my purse and phone from my room and made my way outside. I waited out there for my mom's younger brother, my uncle Chris, who was driving us down to Miami. My mom would've taken me but we needed the extra help and plus her car isn't too much reliable to drive back and forth from Tampa to Miami.
My uncle pulled up into our driveway with his nice matte black Range Rover with red interior. So sexy!! (The interior, not my uncle, ew). He was pretty successful in the drug industry and made sure people knew it. He parked his sexy range next to my moms beat up 2001 Toyota. We clearly weren't rich but never really complained. My mom worked hard for the money she does have and did her best to support me by herself since my dad left us when I was only 3. My uncle Chris would always offer to help but with my mom being all holy and saved, she always denied his assistance and called his money the "devil's money". I didn't see a problem with it...new shoes for everyone lol.
"Hey uncs favorite nieceeee!" he screamed as he walked towards me with open arms. He has always called me that even though I really didn't have much competition considering I was his ONLY niece and my mom's ONLY child.
"Heyyy uncle C, what the lick read?!" We were always cool like this with each other. Maybe it was because he wanted to be the "cool uncle" or maybe it was because we weren't too far apart in age. He's only 28 , just 10 years older than me.
"Shittttt nun much, just handling my business like usual, you ready to hit the road?!" He said while putting my bags in the trunk.
"You know it lol, I can't wait to get up outta here!" I replied excitedly. "Ready to start a new chapter, meet new people, get out there ya know?" Since I didn't do much while I was in high school, college was a big deal for me, I knew temptations would hit me hard but my mom always told me 'books before parties and boys!'
"Yea I know how you feel. I'm glad one of us is getting out of here. Tired of seeing the same shit man." he said while looking around. Neither him nor my mom went to college. School just wasn't for my uncle and my mom got caught up in what she thought was love and ended up having me which halted all of her plans to persuade her true career.
As we loaded the last little bit of my things into the range, I looked at my house for one last time since I wouldn't see it for months. Damn, I thought.........Ima miss it.
