The Average Girl

The light seeped through my blinds as I opened my eyes to the annoying buzzing noise coming from my bedside table. Groaning, I reached over and turned off the alarm that had woken me up.
The blinds opened automatically, putting my room under a lightbulb. I blinked twice then rose from my comfortable bed. I hopped into the shower and got dressed for the day.
My outfit consisted of red and black checkered tights with black denim shorts and my combat boots. For my top I pulled out a black crop top and pulled on a spiked leather vest. I sat down at my mirror and brushed my long red hair.
Placing my books in my bag and my flat top hat on my head, I slid down the banister and stepped into the large dining hall.

"Hi dad. Mark." I greeted them and sat down in my seat besides my dad and across from my older brother, Mark, whom was reading a book and munching on a piece of toast.
"Hello family!" Charlotte defended the stairs and took her seat besides me. Charlotte was my God sister and my best friend. When her parents died last year in a crash we automatically took her in.
"Rosalinda, Charlotte. Must you always wear such ghastly clothing." We looked at each other and then at my dad and laughed.
His mouth twitched into a smile and kissed our foreheads before leaving the room. I bit into a pancake and watched as Charlotte stole a piece of mine and offered me a strawberry from her plate.
"You guys are disgusting." Mark said and took his book before leaving us there to finish our breakfast.
We laughed and moved towards the door to go to school. We both were currently going to college at Princeton University and as we walked out of the house, the street started to flood with cameras and news cars as we moved towards Charlotte's car.
We drove towards campus and when we parked the principle was waiting for us. I stepped out while Charlotte stayed inside and hid behind her bag.
I opened the door and dragged her out. "Why are you hiding?"
She bites her lower lip as she ponders her response. "Principles waiting for me is never a good sign. But I've been good I swear!"
Mr. Dushaw tapped his foot and came towards us. Charlotte A.K.A Coal, as I call her, hides behind me.
He clears his throat and speaks, "I am actually here to see you, Rose" my eye bulged from their sockets as I followed him to his office, Coal trailing behind me giving high fives to random people.
I sit in the red plushy chair in the dimmed office. Charlotte stands by the door, saluting to the American flag hanging over his chair. I laughed silently and watched as she sat down and sat up straight, crossing her legs.
"I am here to tell you that you have been doing exceedingly well."
I sighed in relief and watched as Coal dropped the mug that was sitting on the desk top. She catches it before it hits the ground and laughs shyly. "Do not think I forgot about the egg incident in the library" she stops in her tracks and then grabs her bag and runs out of the door. He rises from his chair but then sits back down.
"Anyway I wanted to give you this. The board of education has picked you from thousands to get a free scholarship to any other program or school after college."
I shrieked and although I did not need the scholarship, I had money but I didn't want to depend on my dad my whole life.
I grabbed the folder he handed me and hugged him. "Thanks! Sorry didn't mean to hug you" he laughs as I exit the office.
I ran out of the building and moved to go to the ice cream shop across the street where I knew Coal would be waiting for me. Finally I felt like an average girl as I walked to the light and waited for it to say WALK.
A reporter with glasses, blonde hair, and a red blouse came towards me. I rolled my eyes and contemplated turning around, but she had the recorder in my face already.
"What are you wearing tonight at your father's ball? I am sure it will be an event everyone will not want to miss!"
The light turned WALK, and as I ran across the street, I knew I wouldn't be followed, one thought had crossed my mind as I opened the door and heard the familiar ding of the bell of the ice cream shop door.
So much for being an average girl.
