"Here you go, enjoy your order ma'am!" I said in a chipper tone, smiling at the lady as I handed her the bag of fries.

She grabbed the bag and smiled at me before pulling off. Sighing, I moved from the drive thru window and adjusted my ponytail. I stupidly and accidentally left my work hat at home.

The smell of fries and grease was everywhere, causing me to scrunch my nose.

"Mal! We need you to clean up!" Danni, one of my team members, yelled out from the cash register. She was really busy today; a long line of customers were ready to get their order taken.

"Got it," I mumbled and rushed out the where the tables were. Gosh, McDonalds was crowded today.

Being short did not come to my advantage at all; especially right now. Annoyed, I tried looking around people to find the mess. Finally, I reached the correct table.

A toddler was sitting in a high chair with a chicken nugget in his hand. With him were who I assumed to be his parents. I walked up to the table and the lady looked up at me. She looked exhausted.

"He's spilled some of his soda on the floor. Unfortunately, we don't have enough napkins to clean it up." She stated sternly.

Careful not to roll my eyes, I nodded. "That's alright. I'll be right back." I didn't bother to smile at her. People in public fast food places were so rude. By this point, it didn't surprise me.

I came back with a rag and bent down to clean up the mess. But as I was scrubbing, I felt something hit my head. Instinctively, I raised my free hand to my head.

"Oh!" The lady said suddenly, surprised.

The food on my head felt slimy and wet. And chewed. What the actual hell?

I pinched my two fingers together to get the food off of my hair. I'm pretty sure I would never forget to wear my hat to work after this.

Breathe.

I let out a silent breath and closed my eyes for a second. Lord help me through the day. I did not want to get fired. Opening my eyes, I dropped the food on my hand onto the floor. Quickly, I cleaned that up too.

Finally, I stood up. Without waiting for a thank you or smart remark, I took the rag and hurriedly walked back to where the workers were.

Why did all of the embarrassing things happen to me?

_______

As soon as I pulled into our driveway around 9 pm the sun was setting. I immediately noticed two figures at our front door. Cutting the engine, I sat in the car for a moment. Has mom texted me at all? I checked my phone. Two text messages.

At 3:51 p.m.,

Mom: I love you!

At 8:50 p.m., (10 minutes ago),

Mom: We have new neighbors! They just came over so be ready to introduce yourself Mal.

I groaned. I had forgotten about them. Flashbacks of our old neighbors flooded my mind suddenly. Our old neighbors were pure assholes. The entire family. All of them constantly let their dogs poop in our yard. None of them ever respected us. Were our new neighbors like them? God I hoped not.

My eyes landed on the two figures standing in front of our front door. The light above our door was on, making it easier for me to make out who the people were. A woman and a man. I assumed they were a couple or married. Probably married, I thought. They were laughing. I spotted my mom in front of them, as well as my dad. But, of course my brother wasn't introducing himself or in sight, period.

Sighing, I grabbed my keys and got out of the car. I shut my car door and started up the path to the house.

"Oh, here's my daughter!" My mom exclaimed excitedly to the couple once I was closer. "Mallory, these are our new neighbors Patricia and Mark Lane."

"Hi! I'm Mallory. Nice to meet you guys." I smiled tiredly and shook both of their hands.

The lady smiled at me sweetly after we shook hands. "Hello, dear. I'm so glad we have polite neighbors."

I let out a laugh. "I am too."

"You guys are wel-" My mom was cut off by a sudden unfamiliar voice.

"Hey, is it alright if Brandon comes over?" My head snapped towards the boy who was now standing behind Patricia and Mark.

Holy shit.

He was damn hot.

I tried not to stare at him but couldn't help myself. His facial structure was out of this world; his jawline as sharp as a tack. He had short but shaggy brown hair which perfectly complimented his already perfect face. His lips were perfect also. He was wearing jeans and a regular white tank top made for men. It fit him snug but I wasn't complaining. This boy worked out.

"Of course, Patch. Just make sure he leaves at 10:30." Patricia said, turning back to look at her son.

He smiled at her and was about to turn around without another word until his eyes met mine. Suddenly, his eyes weren't sweet but dark. Mysterious. A smirk slowly appeared on his face.

He spoke again. "Are these our new neighbors?" The smirk was still visible.

He lifted his right hand to his face to rub his jaw. I found that so attractive..

On his right arm was a tattoo. It was of a skull with flames coming up from the head. It was beautiful. Dark yet beautiful. I wondered why he got it.

"Yes, they sure are." Mark said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked at him to get my mind off of how attractive Patch was.

"Patch," Patricia gestured towards my parents, "This is Lisa and James Pierce. And their daughter, Mallory."

Everyone's eyes landed on me and I smiled. Gosh, I was oddly very nervous. This was unusual of me. My face was growing hotter by the second. It was probably obvious to everyone I was red and nervous.

"Mallory," Patch said slowly and clearly as if he was loving the fact that my name was rolling off of his tongue, "Nice to meet you."

I cleared my throat quietly. "Nice to meet you too." I met his eyes and managed a tiny smile.
