I spin my chair around lazily, watching the door as I go around in circles. I push my foot against the counter again and send myself round.
This is what my day consists of.
Waiting, not so patiently, for a customer to enter our barren shop. I would call it a good day if I saw three people. So far... No one.
I hear my mum shuffling around sorting out our recent donations of a dinning room table and chair set.
My mother has always had a passion for anything old, or as she calls it 'vintage'. She set up this shop in a small ghost town in hopes that it will be flooded with people coming to buy something 'retro'.
Business is slow to say the least. Our income is hardly supporting our family, though it is only me and my mum. We earn enough just to stay afloat.
Though no matter how much money we lose running the shop, she will never let go of it.
I spin again my eye catching a movement by the store window. I push my foot out and come to an abrupt stop, my foot hitting the side a little harder than I expected. I let out a small whimper so as not to scare off the rare customer, though my insides are screaming. I let out a blow of air through my teeth and tears prick my eyes. That hurt. A lot.
After my little 'moment' my eyes shoot up remembering I have an audience.
A man in a suit stands looking at me with an eyebrow cocked. I give him what I hope is a charming smile, though I'm sure it looks more like a grimace.
His face is serious and I think, yep he's frowning at me. 'I'm here to pick up a sofa' he says looking at me unimpressed.
I purse my lips and reach for our log book filled with orders. I say filled, though it most definitely is not.
"What is you name?" I ask. He doesn't answer and places his ID on the counter, face buried in his phone. I keep from rolling my eyes and look at it 'Alexander Castillo age 19' I look at the picture, then back up at the suited man. Wow he looks older than he is. Probably the suit? Or maybe the business like I-own-a-jacket-that-costs-more-than-your-monthly-rent expression he wears?
I nod and give him back his ID. "I'll just get my mum to help me bring it to your car." I say already turning away.
He laughs a short clipped laugh, almost like I imagined it. I whip my head around and he again has that weird raised eyebrow thing going on.
"I can carry it." Is all he says. Did rich boy just make a joke?
I shrug and turn around to tell my mum.
She pushes an old table against the far wall and lifts a few chairs upside down onto it.
"Mum... Mr Castillo is here to pick up the sofa" I explain to her as I search the cramped furniture room for the red leather sofa. I spot it as my mum wipes her arm against her forehead. "Remind me to go to the shop to get more painkillers. My back is playing up again." She says running a hand along the red leather.
"I don't think you should do anymore lifting mum. I can manage this, I'll just ask Sammy over quickly." I'm already at the door before she can protest.
Alexander stands tapping his foot impatiently.
"Sorry we won't be a minute. All great things take time" I say going for funny.
He doesn't laugh.
Great, now it's seems like I had said that seriously. Ew.
I shake my head and run across the street towards Sammy's house. He better be in or I will have to take up mr suit guy on his offer to carry it himself. Poor guy, the thought of him having to do actual work... I'm wasting so much of his precious time right now. I smile, I'll make him wait.
Sammy answers the door not at all surprised to see me.
"Shoes now, I need a strong guy but I guess you'll have to do" I joke.
Sammy just rolls his eyes and follows behind me, after shoving on his shoes, without needing any further explanation.
Rich guy is fidgeting uncomfortably, obviously annoyed at having to wait. I get the same when I'm late for something, all nervous and fidgety.
Sammy follows me and I point to the red sofa. He nods and we both lift the sofa. I say sofa but really it's more of a loveseat, or a very small sofa...
We haul it - quite easily - into the shop and I say between breaths. "Could you lead us to your car?" I ask.
He doesn't acknowledge me as he storms from the shop, me, Sammy and the small sofa in tow.
