Introduction

Mum and Dad walk in front of us, walking hand in hand down the Christmas-lit boardwalk. Aaron is at my side, hogging the bag of candy gumdrops and candy sticks. Every time I reach for one, he holds the bag up higher, taking advantage of both our heights. Then, just to top off the teasing, he pops one in his mouth. Now the bag was almost empty, and I had only gotten two gumdrops.

"Aaron!" I whine, reaching towards the bag but failing once again. He laughs, putting another candy in his mouth.
"Share with your sister, Aaron!" My dad yells.

Aaron rolls his eyes, but lowers the bag, which I immediately snatch from his hands. He sticks his tongue out at me, and I stick mine back out at him. We break into laughter. Aaron was two years older than me, and he was visiting home from uni during Christmas break. He was the only brother I had, and we were inseparable. Even as young kids, the time we fought was out of joking matter, and we would easily make up the same day. That's just how we were raised. Whenever our parents fought, they never went to bed angry at each other-even if it meant staying up to the wee hours in the morning. So that's what Aaron and I always did. There was no denying the love that ran between my family and I. We were the cozy family, and everyone in Mullingar knew that. My parents were both lawyers, and successful ones at that.

Aaron's laughter died down when he saw a figure behind me. I turned around, confused, until I saw Brian, my boyfriend for two years whom Aaron hated. He never told me why, but those two were like cats and dogs, and they did anything they could to get my full attention.

Brian was my full on Irish boyfriend. My mum is Irish, and my dad is from Doncaster, so when it comes to the accents, Aaron and I grew up with both, making it hard to understand us most of the time. But Brian was as Irish as they come, his family having the pure heritage for generations. And his family hated the fact that he was dating a "half Irish" as they put it. I'm also German and Scottish somewhere along the lines to make matters worse with his family. But he didn't care. We loved each other, and we loved the fact that we pissed off his family.

"Hello Beautiful." Brian says as he approaches me, kissing me sweetly on the lips right in front of Aaron.
"Hi." I reply, blushing at our PDA that my older brother was currently watching.
"Mmmm...You taste like gumdrops." He says rather loudly, knowing that it'll make my brother mad, "I love it." And he kisses me again, with more force this time. Aaron clears his throat and we break away. I glance at our parents ahead of us, also sharing a passionate kiss underneath a mistletoe.
"I'm going to get more candy, Autumn." Aaron states as he walks away, "Try not to be too busy sucking each other's faces off that you lose Mum and Dad." Brian laughs, and Aaron gives him a quick glare. When Aaron is out of sight, Brian pulls something out of his pocket,
"I got your Christmas present." He says, "And I know Christmas isn't until two more days, but I couldn't wait." He hands me an envelope and a little red velvet box. I open the box first, and it's a beautiful, yet simple ring.
"Brian..." I gasp, "It's beautiful."
"It's an Irish Purity ring. It's just a fancy way of saying an Irish promise ring." He takes it out and I hold out my hand. "You wear it on your right hand to show you are romantically inclined, but haven't found the man you're going to marry." He winks at me and I blush, "You wear it with the bottom of the heart facing towards you if your heart is taken, and the opposite way if you're single." He explains to me, slipping the ring on my right ring finger.
"I guess that means my heart is taken then, huh?" I whisper sweetly at the way he put it on.
"Forever and always." He whispers as our lips brush.
"What's in the envelope?" I say as we continue staring at each other. I grab it from his hand and look at the print on the front.

University of the Arts London

Dear Mr. O'Connell, We are please to inform you that your application is most outstanding, and we would like to invite you to our registration date this upcoming January so you can start the new semester as soon as possible....

I gasp, "Brian you didn't!" I squeal as he lifts me up and spins me around in celebration. He plants an excitement kiss on my lips and we laugh as he waves the envelope in the air,
"This is bloody brilliant Brian! I'm so happy for you!" I say when he puts me down.
"But that's not even the best part." He says, an even bigger grin breaking out on his face, "I want you to come with me." I freeze, my smile slightly dropping. Did I hear him right?
"What?"
"I want you to come to London with me." He sees my face and continues to try and persuade me , "I know this is all sudden, but I love you so fucking much Autumn, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
"Brian, this is my home. I'm already going to university here. I can't just...just drop everything I love and have here to follow you and your dreams. I love you with all my heart, yes. But to leave everything behind...I just don't know..." He face falls,
"Autumn, Love, this is what I've been waiting for my whole life. You've known from the very beginning my dream was to go to this art school..."
"Yes, but things are different now!" I tell him
"The only thing that's different is that I fell in love with you, and I want that love to go on! Don't tell me this was just some...some fling that we had and that's going to end when I leave!"
"No of course not! I would never think that." I begin to twist the new accessory around my finger, "It's just a lot to take in..."
"Can you think about it?" He ask with such plea in his eyes it almost breaks my heart.
"Of course I will. For you I will." I quote our song, and he smiles again.

BANG BANG . We both jump and gunshots and screams. "Mum...Dad..." I whisper before taking off down the street. It can't be them. Don't let it be them.

With my parents being lawyers, they always had enemies that they help put away. One enraged man had recently been let out and fell off the grid. The only thing that we knew was that he had access to guns. And he knew my parents refused protection. They believed there was some good in him.

"AUTUMN!" Aaron's voice yells. I reach the corner of the street and freeze. My parents., laying on the cold hard street, with a bullet in each of their foreheads. I let out a horrible scream and sink down to me knees, clutching my stomach. A pair of shoes come into my vision as I hear Brian's voice call my name, over and over again, trying to coax me back into reality. But I don't want to go back into reality. My parents are dead there. I'm an orphan there. All the voices seem distant, and soon sirens come into the commotion. A pair of strong arms pick me up. I sob into Aaron's chest. He says something to Brian. Police officers want to come and talk to us. To me. They think I saw something. The picture of my parents is glued to my mind. Yes, I saw something, but not what they want. They just want to clean up the mess and forget about it.

Hours pass, and I still haven't moved, spoken, eaten, or drank anything. I hear words about legal guardian, therapy, and will readings. I don't want anything. I already know what I get. Everything is to be divided equally between Aaron and I. We'll never have to work another day in our lives. After everything is cleaned up, I stare at the ring Brian gave me.

I never went to London the next month.
And Brian never came back.

Not even for my parents' funeral.
