He ran down the street, screaming her name. He could hear the man say it in his mind. It was like poison.
"VANESSA!"
He knew he was running fast as physically possible, and yet it felt to him like everything was going in slow motion, He had seen her drive away in that beautiful silver mercedes benz and yet his brain still couldn't process the fact. He knew there was nothing he could do. She was gone. And yet he continued to run.
"VANESSA!"
His body seemed to move faster than even he deemed possible as he chased the car down the road.
"VANESSA!"
And then everything suddenly just...
Stopped.
He heard the shrieks and the screams; he knew they'd be heard for miles. He saw the smoke and the flames rise from the wreckage and yet his brain still didn't process the incident. He heard the scream of the person he loved most in the world and yet it only seemed to last a millisecond before it was over. He didn't feel himself fall to the ground, nor did he feel the salty wet tears as they fell down his cheek. He felt completely numb, and within mere moments, everything was dark.
--
"Sir? Sir, can you hear us? What's your name? Are you Mr..." he sat up quickly as he heard the paramedics speak to him. He couldn't tell fully what they were saying or if they were in fact even talking to him originally.
"Where's Vanessa?"
"Are you Mr Roberts?" He nodded his head, yes. He believed he was Mr Roberts. He believed they were crazy for not answering his question.
"Where is Vanessa?"
"I'm so sorry, sir. When we got to the car... there was nothing we could do. I'm afraid..." He drowned them out. Nothing else mattered. His worst fear had come to pass and he'd failed. He'd failed her. His little sister was dead, and there was nothing he could do. Sorrow and regret and guilt all filled him at once as he realised how mistaken he'd been, thinking he could catch his drunk sister as she drove away in their parents' shiny new mercedes. She didn't even make it to the end of the street before it had happened. And as he burst into tears, and his screams became the ones filling the streets, he realised something. No matter how big or small, he would give anything to turn back the clock five minutes.
