The Hunger Games

The Reaping was going to happen. Katniss could not stop it no matter how much she wanted to she just could not.

She was not scared for Prim, her little sister whom she loved very much. Her name was only put in the ballot one time and Katniss's was put in 20 times. The Peacekeepers led the group of girls, including Katniss and Prim, torward stage on which rested the plastic ball that their lives depended on. As you might be wondering why their lives depend on a plastic ball is because every year each district ( there are 12 districts ) must have a Reaping in which they will pick 1 boy and 1 girl to go into the Hunger Games as a tribute and in that game they shall mindlessly slaugter each other until only one is left and that tribute is crowned Victor of the Hunger Games. The 2 groups of children stand there anxiously as the adults on the stage get ready to pick.

Finally Effie Trinket says, "  Welcome to the 74th Hunger Games Reaping!"  in her annoying, high shrill voice. As Effie makes her way torward the girls ballet she said, " Ladies first and may the odds be ever in your favor!" As Effie reached her hand into the ballet the girls side seemed to tense ten fold. As Effie took her hand out of the plastic ball by then all the girls eyes were the size of cookies and she opened her mouth to say the name,"Primrose Everdeen!" Everybody's eyes turned back to normal size but all the heads were turned torward Prim.It took her a second to proccess what just happened then it finally got through to her and she started walking slowly torward the stage while Katniss screamed," PRIM  NO PRIM PLEASE NOO!!!!" But Prim calmly walked up to the stage as Effie calmly whispered in her ear," The odds are never in your favor." Prim looked up at her in suprise but Effie slowly brought her hand into a shhh motion. Finally, it was time for the boys choosing. The suspense was the same as the girls as Effie brought out the piece of paper and read the name written,"Peeta Mellark!" All heads turned to the boy with the bread who looked like he was going to throw up. Much like Prim he slowly approached the stage and Effie did the same thing as she did to Prim. Then Effie said, " Thank you for attending the 74th Hunger Games Reaping." Effie obviously expected them to clap but all they did was make three fingers kiss them and raise it up. It was the sign of the rebellion. The train ride to the capital was akward and silent, their mentor,  Haymitch Abernathy stumbled around like a drunkard, probably beacause he was one. Prim was still in a shock about being a tribute while Peeta tried to cheer her up but finally she just snapped," THERE'S NO HOPE!! WERE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!"  Peeta sat there, stunned that this quaint little girl would ever yell at someone like that. But then again there was his mother. But the day before the games Peeta had to ask," Does your sister, Katniss have a thing with that guy, what's his name, Gale?" Prim looked at him with a mix of confusement and suprise but said," Actually I'm not sure love has always confused me." Then in realization she let out a little squeak," Wait do you have a thing for her?" And Peeta looked at her sheepishley,"No I just think she's cute that's all." But Prim would not take no for an answer so she said," You toooatally like her!"

Peeta looked at her in astonishment and said," NO!" And got up and went to the buffet. The next day it was time to get ready for the games. Prim was getting ready to go to the arena when her designer and stylist, Cinna, stopped her and said in a low voice," Here, your sister told me to give this to you." And he lifted her collar and pinned the mockingjay pin onto her jacket and said in a hushed voice," The odds are never in your favor, always remember that." Her eyes teared up as she stepped into the chute that would send her to her iminent death. As she emerged from underground the sunlight peirced her eyes like the knife that was most likely going to peirce her heart. When her eyes adjusted she could see Peeta and their eyes met and they had equal amount of grief. But Prim turned her eyes away and saw a nice bright orange backpack at the edge of the Cornucopia and she thought hey maybe I can get off easy with that. But before she knew it the horn blared and all of the tributes shot off of their pedastals like bottle rockets but just as Prim was about to step foot off of the platform a boy from district 3 charged at her but stopped and coughed. Hot, gooey blood shot from his mouth onto her as he fell face first into the earth. The girl from district 6 charged torward the boy from district 1 but the girl from district 6 got stabbed in the chest. The girl from district 8 charged at Prim but she sidestepped at the last minute and ran for the orange bag. As she ran she saw Peeta running torward her and he yelled,"Were allies, right?" Prim yelled back,"Ya I think so!" Peeta saw what she was going for and nodded at her in approvement and held up his sword as if to say I got this now you get that the boy from district 1, Marvel charged torward her with his 6 inch sword but Peeta jumped in front of him and cut his leg with a deep gash so if he didnt die right then he'd most likely die from blood poisoning. The girl from district 1, Glimmer came over to help Marvel but by then Peeta and Prim were already in the woods looking for a good place to set up camp. They found a nice cave and settled down there. While Prim stiffly put up vines over the cave entrance, inside the cave Peeta was attempting to make a fire with no success. By then they had gotten themselves ready for the night and were just settling down when the capital anthem started playing and the faces of the deaceased tributes appeared in the starry night sky. In the orange backpack there was a water canteen, some rope, 5 beef strips, some cheese, and a sleeping bag so Prim and Peeta squeezed into the tiny sleeping bag. The night was long and suspensful and at the slightest noise Prim would tense like a bungy cord.

At home Katniss and her mother watched in suspense. Mrs. Everdeen was crying with relief that Prim had gotten through the Cornucopia bloodbath. But back in the Arena it was just turning morning when Prim heard a tiny rustle in the leaves. She immediatly tensed and shook Peeta awake and he went to investigate. Peeta slowly walked over too the bush and warily eased it apart. Inside he found the body of Glimmer, a fire still burning  beside her and over her stood Marvel. Both boys slowly turned their heads up to look at one another. Prim was a few feet behind Peeta when Marvel took a swipe with his sword but Prim reacted too fast to him. She deflected his blow with her spear and stabbed him in the shoulder and he fell to the ground and Peeta rushed torward him with a knife and knelt down then said,"Sorry I have to do this." And then stabbed him with a look of pain on his face. The boy from district 8 suddenly appeared behind Prim and looked at Peeta with a look of great disgust on his face and he raised the knife and stabbed Prim in the small of her back. Peeta looked at him in horror and charged him with his serrated knife and stabbed him in the chest. In district 12 Katniss and Mrs. Everdeen had frozen, looking at her small, box TV in horror and Katniss's eyes welled up with tears and her face was contorted with pain. All of a sudden Katniss burst out of the house and into the woods to hunt. When she found her bow and quiver she shot at anything that moved. Even Gale had to wrestle her to the ground and tell her everything would be all right. But the thing is everything wasn't all right, things would never be right. Prim was the only thing that ever made Katniss laugh and smile besides Gale. Prim was the light of her life and she had just lost her to the Games.
