her slender fingers wrapped around the porcelain mug, her dark eyes darting around at the other patrons in the small cafe. it was quiet. and peaceful. and everything that her life wasn't.
she lifted the cup, taking a long drink and letting the liquid gold settle her nerves.

she was beautiful, really. from her pale skin, to her radiant smile-- right down to the bruises she struggled to keep hidden. the lilac brushes under her eyes hinted that she hadn't rested. not since he came back, anyway.

just the thought of him made her ill.
his towering figure, his dark, looming eyes that could send her into a state of shock with one glance-- his harsh words that deeper than any knife.

the raven-haired girl blinked away the tears as she realized that she wouldn't be able to escape his grasp. he owned her, and she couldn't do a damn thing. she stayed still as he punched her, kicked her— called her horrid names in his drunken state, which was most of the time. and all she could do was cry and beg him to stop.

it wasn't until she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window—tired, broken, lost—that she realized, even if she got away, he would always find a way back.

just like the stains on her teeth.
