Cigarette Smoke

Cigarette Smoke

I never wanted to try a cigarette.

When my father and I

Walked by the high school when I was young,

We would cover our noses

To hide the stench.

I never wanted to try a cigarette.

My grandmother once told me

How she set a piano on fire,

Just by the pieces

Of the glowing embers.

I never wanted to try a cigarette.

High school students love

To stand outside and smoke.

This always has...

Interested me.

I never wanted to try a cigarette.

Until the boy with the devil green eyes,

Offered it to me.

I took it,

Without a second thought.
