I arrive at my house pulling in the driveway still shocked I had seen my best friend. I walk in the house to see my mom in her "Kiss The Cook" apron. Her perfectly straight hair falling down her shoulders, while her back was turned chopping a tomato on the chopping board.
I walk towards her to sit on the counter near the sink brushing an apple on my shirt before bitting into it.
"So guess who I ran into" I said taking another bite if my apple.
"Who"
"George!"
"Oh wow how is he? I haven't seen him in such a long time... 2 years to be exact." She walked over to the sink, running some potatoes under the water.
"He's fine, his family is visiting down here for the weekend. He even invited me to a bonfire!"
"A bonfire? With actual fire?" Her eyes meeting mine. Her eyebrows furrowed together I could tell that was her way of saying she didn't approve.
"No mom with water!" I said rolling my eyes getting off the counter "you can't keep me safe from everything, eventually I'll have to fight my own battles one day!"
"And when that day comes your father and I will talk about it, in the meantime hand me the cheese from the refrigerator." I frowned at her words, knowing I shouldn't have told her about the bonfire knowing she'd disapprove. It was just a stupid bonfire, of coarse there was going to be drinking and drugs but that doesn't mean i was going to do any of them!
I hand her the cheese, tapping her back with it as she continued to wash her potatoes.
"Here mom!" I tap her again. She brings her hand behind her and feels around for it with her body still faced away from me. "Mom are you okay?" I ask worried.
I see her throw everything in the sink, turning it off. Her fingers grab the side of the sink tightly turning her fingers white, making her back muscles tense through her shirt. She throws her head down sobbing. I rush by her side in my immediate reaction to calm my mom.
"Is everything alright mom?" I try to hug her, but she pries me off. She uses her hand to wipe her nose, turning her head towards me. Our gazes meeting, her red eyes pained, angered. She gave me a reassuring smile indicating she was okay. But I knew my mom better than anyone, and I knew when she was lying.
"Mom?" I rub her back up and down attempting to calm her but she removes it and brings my hand up to her cheek. She closes her eyes as if she was trying to savor the moment.
"I love you and I want you to never forget that okay!" Her eyes solely on me, making sure I understood. A tear comes strolling down her cheek. I gently wipe it away with my thumb. I didn't know what was going on but something in the pit of my stomach told me something wasn't right.
"Mom what's going on"
"Nothing sweetie. Your father and I are just having a few problems." She kissed my forehead.
"What are they?" I tried to test her to see how far I could go with this. I ask knowing this was serious because my mom and dad never fought.
"Nothing sweetie, I want you to go to that bonfire and have a nice time. I'll deal with your father." She gave me a small smile and let go of my hand. My hand dropped at my side as my mom went back to the sink cooking as if nothing happened.
I stare at her not knowing what just happened. That was strange for my mom to have acted like that. Not ONCE have i ever seen her break down the way she did. Why hadn't she told me what was bothering her? What had my father done? But I didn't dwell on the subject any longer making my way up the stairs, my time for getting ready was running short.
