I picked up the heavy boxes from the car, and waddled them into the dining room. The room was a light pale blue with a beautiful mahogany dining table set in the middle. It looked like a room out of a movie, set and designed for perfection. Well, except for all of the boxes surrounding it. But, does that make it the beginning of a movie or a setting up the set of a movie scene? I'm not sure. I just hope it's not a rom-com.
"Cael, come get your boxes or I'm throwing them away," my mom threatened while looking at my ten boxes that filled up most of the moving car space.
"I'm coming, mom," I yelled back.
I picked up one of the boxes labelled "Cael's Books". There were about five other boxes like this, but all too heavy to lift more than one at a time. I walked into the open doorway, slipped off my shoes, and walked through the entrance to get to the staircase.Once I reached it, I looked up and saw the daunting steepness of the stairwell. While it had many redeemable features, such as good lighting, beautiful carpet, pale pink borders, and rails, the steepness made me nervous when my mom and I first saw the house. But, as my mom said," Stairs, shmairs." So, I proceeded to climb up. One Two Three Four Fiv....
Oh no...
*Brrruuuump*
"Oh, not again Caelinus, I told you they you packed too many books into one box," scorned my mom as she heard me fall down the stairs.
After a couple moments of indescribable pain, I got up to get the boxes filled with my clothes. They were significantly lighter than my book boxes, and wouldn't leave me with a nasty bruise from carrying them upstairs. After all of the boxes with my clothes in them were in my room, I took the time to look around. The room was quite big, enough to fit my bed, bookcase, and television with some decent room to move around. The closet was nice and would be able to hold all of my clothes. There was a connecting bathroom, but it was more of a luxurious add on due to me being the only person living upstairs.
I started planning how I would arrange everything, but, unfortunately, I got interrupted.
"Caelinus, come help me lift this box," ordered my mother.
"Sure, be there in a minute," I responded. I rushed over to where my mom was, not wanting her to lift anything too heavy. I saw her with a big box in her hands about to topple over. I took two giants steps, and was there to help. The box wasn't that heavy, but I think she was carrying most of the weight.
We put the box down on the kitchen counter. Each of us taking a break from the laborious lift. We looked at each other and knew moving the boxes inside would take us all night to complete.
"It seems that we can't try out the restaurant you saw, so how about we order some pizza?" said my mom.
Ordering pizza seemed to become a traditional dinner in the Cartwright household. With many choices to go by it was favored over anything else for it's quick arrival time and tastiness.
"Sure," I said knowing that if I said no it would become a debate on which delivery place we should choose, which always ended up with pizza. She got out her card and phone, and then proceeded to place the order. Since we have lived together for so long, and have ordered pizza more than a hundred times, she knew what I wanted. Without any time to spare we went back to the car and started bringing in more boxes.
When the pizza came, we were done putting the boxes where they needed to be. We were starving from the work, so we quickly opened up the case that contained our cheesy deliciousness and dived in.
"So, are you ready for school tomorrow?" questioned my mother, trying to make light conversation.
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be. I just hope it won't be too bad," I answered.
"Don't worry, you've done this plenty of times before, I'm sure you'll be fine," she reassured.
I wasn't quite sure this time would be like the last; with everything going on it seemed like it was going to be the worst year of my life. Not only did my mom just get divorced, but my dad had suddenly become disinterested in me when I didn't want to take over the family business. On top of all of that I had to move to a new town that nobody knows about. I have to make new friends and become accustomed to a new school. It was going to be absolutely horrible.
But, I replied with a simple,"Yeah, I guess you're right," just to make sure she would not worry about me.
After we had finished dinner, I retired to my room upstairs. Everything was in boxes, except for my bed, so I simply moved the other items in my closet. I went over to the suitcase outside of my room and brought it in. I plopped it on top of my bed, so that I could retrieve my pajamas. When unzipping the suitcase, it made a soft hissing sound as if it did not want to be opened. I opened it and pulled out an oversized t-shirt with a pair of athletic shorts. I then proceeded to take off the clothes I was wearing and started putting on my pajamas. I went through my nightly hygienic ritual of brushing my teeth and washing my face before I lay in my bed.
The usual anxiety that came with tomorrow being the first day of school finally reached the depths of my belly. Thoughts of never being liked and being excluded from the entire high school filled my head. What if I offended the wrong people my first day? What if I am too shy to talk to anyone and come off entitled? What if my teachers hate me, because my procrastination causes them to spend less time with their families? What if a hole appears in the ground and swallows me up? While it seems unlikely to happen there is always a small probability that it might.
I need to go to sleep. I plug in my phone, turn the lights in my room off, close my door, lay on my bed, and close my eyes.
Author's Note
Caelinus is pronounced "say-LEEN-es" according to namegarden.com. So, I'm guessing Cael sort of sounds like "sail" ? I don't know, if you have a better idea, please tell me.
