Seating herself on the heater, Emily turned to stare out the window. The heater was not yet turned on because it was still the end of September. In a couple of months, it would be toasty warm and the ideal place to sit for Emily. Currently, the metal was cold, hard, and overall uncomfortable to sit on. Emily shifted her position so that one leg was up on the heater and the other leg was standing up on the floor, still supporting her body weight. Doing this, it only took a simple turn of the head to change her view from the window to the round clock on the wall, which read 11:20. That way, she could monitor the time as it passed, without the struggle of having to turn around each time she looked at the clock. There were still 50 minutes left of lunch. Emily let out a sigh. It was going to be a long wait until lunch was over. All the same, she was used to waiting, for she waited every day for lunch to end and her next class to start.

Emily sat on the heater and looked out the window for about half of an hour, watching people come and go, some walking, some being transported within vehicles. Once, somebody rode past on a bicycle. Occasionally, someone would pass by with a dog. Though Emily liked most animals, she wasn't a big fan of dogs. She was slightly afraid of most dogs, especially the little yappy ones with the sharp teeth and vicious look in their eye. She had come across a few bad tempered dogs in her lifetime, and had been bitten more than once. She found it highly annoying when people pretended that all dogs were perfect, and if the dog was attacking someone, it was the person's fault. She knew it was often untrue. Some dogs were just not nice. On the other hand, she had known a few dogs that weren't so bad. One of the had been her childhood dog, Velvet, who she had loved very much. He had been very gentle and sweet, a white Boxer, and had spent a lot of time with Emily when she was young. However, he had died when Emily was 7. She had been very sad. She would never meet another dog like Velvet.

Bored of sitting and doing nothing, Emily decided she would go check and see what they had in the breakfast room. She hoisted herself up onto her feet and quickly jogged into the breakfast room. Upon the table were a container of yogurt tubes, a few cheese strings, a bag of bagels, a container of cream cheese, and some muffins. Emily reached inside the bag and took out a bagel. It was topped with sesame seeds. Emily dropped the bagel into the toaster and set it to 3 minutes. In the meanwhile, she picked up a cheese string and attempted to remove the wrapper. However, the wrapper was being stubborn and it took her a good minute to finally pry it open. Then she triumphantly popped the cheese string into her mouth and chewed. This cheese string tastes like plastic. She thought to herself.

It was less of a challenge to open the yogurt tube, but nonetheless, it still splattered yogurt all over the floor when opened. She let out another sigh and marched to the other side of the room to fetch a paper towel from the paper towel roll on the counter. She deposited the paper towel onto the spilled yogurt and used her foot to wipe up the mess. A popping sound announced that Emily's bagel was ready as soon as she threw out the dirty, crumpled paper towel. Grabbing a plate, the rushed over to the toaster to collect her somewhat crispy browned bagel. She lifted it quickly and carefully out of the toaster to avoid getting burnt. Neverless, it was still very hot and smelled slightly well done.

Once she had spread cream cheese over both halves of her bagel, she sat down in the cafeteria near a group of other students. She was close enough to hear them talk, but not so close that she was part of the group. Munching her bagel, she listened to them talk and fool around. Though she didn't know any of them as friends, she still liked to hear what was going on in their lives and in the world.

In general, everyone seemed to be in a good mood. They were laughing and making jokes, and also talking about politics. Eric spent about five minutes complaining about the current politicians in charge of the country. Personally, Emily couldn't care less about politics. The subject was not one of the things she found entertaining. Afterwards, Katie informed the group that her cat was old and dying. Everyone was sympathetic and spoke kind words to Katie. Then, Jon launched into a funny story about his weekend. Emily was surprised to hear he was dating a ninth grader. Emily deduced that she probably should of guessed by the way he was sitting very close to her on the bench and leaning against her, looking like a possessive guard dog. She was very pretty. She had long, rust coloured hair and dark brown eyes, a contrast to Jon's bluish- green eyes and black hair.

Emily herself had never had a boyfriend, but once she had had a crush on a boy. However, that hadn't gone very well. At first, the boy, Ronald Green, had been a good friend to her. Emily had been secretly in love with him for many years, but never had the courage to ask him out. She had cared about him a lot, and it had been putting her through a lot of pain, not being with him all the time. She had always missed him and felt lonely without him. The only time she had been happy was when he was around. What they had wasn't enough for Emily, and she fell into a deep depression. One day, when Emily was in grade 10, she had been feeling especially courageous, and she finally forced herself to ask for his permission to be his girlfriend. He immediately rejected her invitation and told her he just wanted to be friends. Devastated, Emily had gone home and cried for a very long time, several times. She became very angry with Ronald and all the pain he had put her through. After about a week, she had developed a steady hatred for Ronald. She ended their friendship online, and since that dreadful day, she had never spoken to him again. Luckily, that was easy to do since he went to another school. Just thinking about him made her feel angry and disgusted.

It had taken her a long time to get over her depression about him. It had been very hard for her. She had lost her motivation to do everything, and nothing had been fun for her anymore. It had gotten so bad for her she had stopped taking going to school and taking baths for about a month. She spent most of her time in bed, sleeping, and crying. Most people said you could never hate someone you truly loved. Emily knew this was wrong.

Emily's brothers and her mother had been very worried about her. She remembered her brother, Simon, would sometimes come into her room and watch her, looking lost. He would sit there for hours, keeping Emily company, not saying a word. Cayden gave Emily many of his toys as gifts. He had sewed Emily a pillow by hand, with the help of his mother. Emily still had it on her bed. Kelvin was very irritable and also cried a lot, as he often did when he was upset. Emily's mother would come upstairs to Emily's bedroom at night to sit with her and talk. She would bring Emily her food each meal time, as Emily had given up on getting it herself. Her family spent a lot of time trying to cheer her up.

Eventually, Emily decided she would have to try and be happy by herself or she would always be depressed and never get anything done. To learn to be happy, she would have to develop all new interests and hobbies, and occupy her mind with different thoughts. She would have to make goals for the future, and find things to care about. She knew that if she was to be happy, instead of just having one thing in life that made her happy, she would have to be flexible, and like many things, and be willing to change her interests if necessary, or find something dependable. This is how she found her interest for writing. Of course, she had always liked writing, but it hadn't been a part of her everyday life, apart from school.

Another thing she had found out that she liked was Science. More specifically, Physics. She found that she enjoyed very much learning about how the universe functioned, and different things such as how particles and atoms worked together to make up matter, and string theory. She didn't understand most of it, but she hoped that her comprehension of science would continue to grow. She also liked learning about chemistry, and the periodic table of elements. Her favourite element was mercury, because it was a shiny, liquid metal. However, she didn't care much for Biology, or dissecting gross dead things.
