The snow crunched beneath Lathan's boots as he walked down the street. It had snowed all night and the morning air was clear. He kicked a small rock across the street, as he wrapped the jacket around himself tightly.
"Gross." He shivered, having stepped into a mushy snow pile. He had always preferred summer over winter.
He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. One new message.
Lea: Bring me food.
Ping!
Lea: please.
Lathan rolled his eye with a chuckle. Such a mannered young lady.
He knew this part of town well. The next store was a bakery just down the street.
Lathan: yes your majesty. Anything for the queen.
He pushed his phone back into his pocket making his way to the store. The warm air hit his face and he breathed in the smell of baked goods with a content smile. Looking around the store he spotted only a few people. A couple on a couch, a business looking man and an elderly lady with what he presumed would be her grandchild.
Lathan made his way to the counter, looking at the display, mouth watering.
"What can i get you, dear?" The woman looked to be in her early forties. She was smiling at him warmly.
"Can I get two cinnamon rolls, four chocolate chip cookies and two hot chocolates please?" He smiled back. "Sure thing." She chirped, gathering the goods.
Lathan watched as she skillfully poured the milk into the chocolate mixture, creating a heart. "There you go, sweetheart. You better go get the hot chocolate to whoever it is quickly, before it turns cold." She gave him a knowing smile.
"Will do." Lathan blushed slightly "Thank you." He grabbed the bag and cups and stepped outside. The cold air hit him again and he pulled a face in discomfort. His stride was quick as he hurried to Lea's house, keen to get somewhere warm. Her house was only a few blocks away from the bakery.
He reached the door and knocked. Steps where heard and then the door opened.
There stood Lea. She was wearing black skinny jeans, fluffy socks and a rather large purple hoodie. A black beanie rested on her head. Her neck was wrapped in a scarf.
"Lathan! Come in." She ushered him out the cold and Lathan couldn't have been happier. "Oh my god you brought food. I love you so much right now." Lathan laughed. "I brought you hot chocolate too." He said, handing her a cup.
Lea grabbed the bag and his cup and put them down on the table. She reached forwards and wrapped her arm around his neck. Lathan relaxed into her embrace and pulled her closer.
"I missed you." Lea whispered, sending shivers down his spine.
"I missed you too."
She pulled back only to give him a peck on the lips. Lathan smiled to himself. They'd been together for almost a year now but these simple gestures always got him.
Lea moved to the kitchen, rummaged around some shelves and got out two plates.
"Let's go eat outside. The garden has a lovely place to sit."
Normally Lathan would not have agreed, but this was Lea. He did not mind sitting in the cold if he had her by his side.
"Sure thing, babe."
Lea grabbed a coat for herself and beanie for him. She placed the beanie on his head and kissed his cheek. She proceeded to place the goods on the plates. Lathan grabbed the drinks and followed her outside. The garden was covered in a thick layer of snow.
