I sat at the end of my bed for the thousandth time, thinking of my mother and my life. Kathy, my absolutely horrid stepmother, had sent me to my room for my reckless behavior. But it wasn't a surprise. I would always reckless in her eyes. William, on the other hand, was the golden twin. He could never and would never do anything wrong.
I had been running around with William playing pirates when Emma, our oldest sister, picked me up and spun me around, causing me to kick over a vase. It shattered everywhere. Emma set me down and stared at the broken vase and laughed. I smacked her with my wooden sword and ran off. I heard a ghastly scream from behind me and I whirled around to find Kathy charging at me like an angry rhino. I screamed and ran to my room, barricading the door.
I hated Kathy. She was abusive, old, self centered, and an alcoholic. When my real mom died, my dad remarried to Kathy. Father was often very busy with work, and one day he left to go to the states on a business trip.. Three years later, and he still hadn't come back..
Ever since father left Kathy treated me horribly, like I was her version of Cinderella. She was always nagging about how "You MUST be a proper lady", "Proper ladies don't play pirates", "You are a waste of a human being", and such. It was rather stupid seeming she didn't even care about me.
She suddenly pounded on the door.
"STAY IN THERE YOU LITTLE BRAT!" She screamed.
"YOU'LL NEVER BE MY MOTHER! SO YOU CANT TELL ME WHAT TO DO, WENCH!" I screamed back. She kicked the door and screamed again.
"DONT COME OUT UNTIL I SAY YOU CAN!" She screeched.
I opened my door and threw my sword at her face, hitting her right between the eyes. I slammed my door back and locked it and managed to push my nightside table in front of it. She screamed another blood curdling scream and slammed what seemed like her whole body against the door.
I should have known not to mess with her when she was in one of her moods... I backed away from it as she slammed herself against the door again. I screamed as loud as I could as she broke down the door and looked straight at me. She beat the hope out of me. She left me laying on the floor, crying and bloody-nosed. Emma ran in and picked me up.
"Oh my gosh..," she whispered. William came rushing in after her and stood there staring at me.
**Seven Years Later**
I climbed into bed after a long day of work and agonizing lectures from Kathy. I was only seventeen and Kathy had already set me up for a courtship with a boy name Oliver from down the road. Oliver's father was an accountant at the largest bank in London, which meant he had a lot of money. I hated her for it. She had tried setting me up with men several times, only to have me ruin everything, on purpose. I closed my eyes and cuddled up to my pillow.
CLINK! I heard something hit my window. I sat up and looked out. Nothing. I slowly laid back down and closed my eyes. CLINK! I sat up again. Still nothing. I laid back down yet again.
I finally fell asleep around 11:30 only to be woken up by the sound of the handle on the window being rattled. I sat up slowly and watched silently. My eyes got wide as I saw the handle completely turn, the window flying open.
A little ball of light flew in and hit me in the chest. I threw my hand over my mouth and threw myself off the bed. I quickly stood up and backed away from the bed. The little ball of light got out from under my covers and flew around my room. I watched it carefully. It seemed to be following something.
I turned slowly and there was a shadow all across the wall. I frantically looked around my room for the person supplying the shadow. I couldn't see anyone.
I turned back and watched the little ball of light. As I stepped closer to it, it seemed to form a little body. I took another step closer. It --she, was a tiny person, with a pair of tiny wings on her back. She had on a little green dress that looked like a leaf, and her blonde hair pulled up in a bun. She smiled innocently at me.
I opened my mouth to say something, but she waved her arms around and yellow dust flew in my face. I sneezed and looked down at my feet. They weren't on the ground anymore.
I was about to scream when someone from behind me put their hand over my mouth. I struggled to get out of their grip, but he turned me around and put his finger over his lips, shushing me. I stared at him wide eyed.
"I'm going to remove my hand. Don't make a sound," he whispered. I nodded slowly. He let go and dropped his hand.
"You.. We're off the ground..," I tried to steady myself but I ended up almost being upside down. I was shaking.
"I know," he smiled and flipped me back around.
"How on earth are we possibly off the--," I started but he shushed me.
"Pixie dust," he wiggled his fingers.
"SKYLER WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?!" Kathy yelled.
"Is that Wendy?" The boys eyes lit up.
"Wendy?" I repeated. I hadn't heard that name in a very long time. No one ever spoke of her anymore.
"Wendy isn't here?" He looked confused.
"SKYLER, ANSWER ME NOW!" Kathy screamed.
"I need to hide.. Please help me..," I said, trying to move, but it was of no use. He nodded and took my hand and flew us down to the ground. I quickly walked to my closet with him and hid behind all my clothes. I heard my door slam open.
"Where are you, you little brat?" She asked. The boy tapped my shoulder.
"Who is that?" He whispered extremely quietly in my ear.
"My step mother," I said, equally as quiet.
"You'll regret hiding in the morning when you get no breakfast, you useless girl," the door closed again. I opened my closet door quietly and stepped out. The boy got out and flew back up into the air.
"Why aren't you afraid? And where's Wendy?" He asked.
"I.. Well, normally I would be terribly frightened if a strange boy came flying through my window, but... You don't seem like a bad person.. I guess.." I said, taking a step away from him.
"Do you know of me?" He asked.
"No... Should I?," I whispered.
"Do you even know a Wendy? Her name is Wendy Moira Angela Daring. She has two brothers, and she has brown hair... Ring a bell?"
"How do you know Wenn?" I asked. That's what William and I would always call her. "Mother" was too boring for us. Plus, we were used to hearing father call her Wenn, so it caught on.
"Tink, did you take us to the wrong house?" He pointed at the little woman with wings.
"Wait, it can talk?" I asked.
"Well duh! Tinkerbell isn't dumb," the boy scoffed.
"Why does that sounds familiar?"
"I knew it!" He smiled as he flew towards the window. "I'll tell you all about it on the way there. Maybe you can help us find Wendy."
"Us? Who is us?" I asked. He flew at me and grabbed my hand.
"The Lost boys, Tink, and of course, me," he pulled me towards the window and pulled me up onto the sill.
"Put me down! I could fall!" I said a little too loudly.
"Second star to the right and straight on till morning," he said with certainty.
"But.. You're insane. You're going to let me jump out the window!
"You'll be fine! Tink, give her a sprinkle of pixie dust," he grabbed her and shook her violently over my head. The yellow dust fell over me in a blanket and I was in the air again.
"What about Will? I can't leave him here all by himself..," I grabbed onto my curtains to keep myself in the room.
"Then go and fetch him and we'll be on our way," he sat down impatiently on my window sill. I felt my face get red as I pulled myself back to the ground, but I kept floating up.
This was my one chance to escape. Escape Kathy, Oliver, and anything else she had up her sleeve. Everything I ever hated in my life.. Gone..
I quickly shoved myself to the ground and went to my door and snuck out and into William's room. He sat up and looked at me.
"You all right? I heard Kathy yelling," he whispered.
"Come, we're leaving.. Forever," I whispered back, trying not to let myself think about what I was really doing. He raised an eyebrow and got out of his bed and put on his slippers and followed me back to my own room. The boy was still sitting there.
"Sky, what is this?" He asked uncertainly.
"He said he can bring us somewhere else," I took his hand. "Away from Kathy. And he says he knew Wenn."
"Are you being serious?" He looked at me. I nodded and got a coat from my closet. I slipped on a pair of shoes and waited for him to answer.
"This is wonderful. You get to meet Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Cubby, and the Twins," The boy smiled. He reached out and took my hand and pulled me up on the edge of my window. Will stared at me for a minute before shaking his head.
"He's trying to kill us, Sky. Quick, get down. Kathy will never know what happened," he tried to pull me down but the other boy wouldn't let him.
"We can get away from here," I tried to convince myself more than him.
"Do you even know his name?!" Will grabbed my hand and yanked me down.
"Peter. Peter Pan," the boy grinned and put both his hands on his waist. I looked up at him and my heart dropped. This really was insane. I was about to jump out of a three story building with a boy named Peter Pan, like in the old stories Emma and Uncle Michael used to tell.
"Peter Pan as in Peter Pan in Neverland?" Will scoffed. Peter grinned and jumped off the window and back into the room.
"So you do know of me!"
"Oh my God," was all that came out of my mouth.
"Sky, right? Come with me, and I'll get you away from this 'Kathy', whatever that is. And you can help me find Wendy."
I glanced at Will before I let Peter pull me back up onto the window sill.
"Skyler! Please," Will looked like he was about to throw up.
"You'll be fine here. Kathy won't even miss me.." I whispered. Will quickly climbed up beside me.
"I won't let him take you without me," he took my hand.
Peter grinned and in one swift move he yanked us out the window. I screamed so loud my throat started to burn. I flailed my limbs around trying to make myself somehow slow down. The ground was getting quickly closer. Then we went up, away from the ground and up towards the sky.
"Tink, give 'em some dust!" Peter shouted over the wind. The little pixie blew the yellow dust all over Will and I. Peter slowly let go of my hand without me realizing it, and I screamed as soon as I felt myself going down.
"HAPPY THOUGHTS!" He screamed. I screamed louder. He flew down to me and grabbed hold of my arm.
"Happy thoughts! It only works when you're thinking happy thoughts!" He said. He let go again. I squeezed my eyes shut. All I could feel was Will's agonizing grip on my body.
Getting away from Kathy was all I was thinking about, though. The wind blowing on my face. All my troubles behind me. I opened my eyes. I was still floating right in between Will and Peter. As I looked around at London below us I laughed and my heart skipped a beat. I hadn't laughed in a long time.
"BANGARANG!" Peter yelled. He took my hand and flew us up towards the stars, and the whole sky went black. All I could see was us. We were all glowing bright from the pixie dust.
Peter put his hand down and skimmed it through what seemed like water.
"There's water?!" Will yelled, still attached to my side. Peter took my hand and put it in the water. It was cold, but it wasn't. I smiled and took my hand out. I was actually flying over a body of water, heaven knows where.
It seemed like an endless flight. It felt like time just stopped and we sort of just floated in place. Finally, I saw land.
"Neverland?" I asked. Peter nodded and we flew down to a big forest of trees. We landed on an open field of grass. Peter landed perfectly on his feet, and I would have too if Will hadn't pulled me down. I got up and brushed the dirt off my night gown. Will stood up and looked around us in awe. Peter motioned for us to follow him, and he led us down a small path that led to a giant tree that somehow looked like it was touching the clouds.
"That was amazing," I said quietly. Peter grinned again.
"Now, come along. You have to meet The Lost boys," he said excitedly.
