It had been another one of those unending endocrinology lectures. Dera hated those. They always ended with the professor giving a ridiculous 400 page essay some parasite's effect on the hormones. This time around it was trypanosome. Yay!
Days like this her mom's I told you so's always came back to bitch slap her in the face. She didn't get. No one got it.
"You're from a very influential family, why do you want to stress yourself and go to med school again? Harvard isnt all that". But it was. "I thought your dream school was Yale. Now you want to go to Massachusetts's?". Dreams change. "With your gp you can work anywhere in the country. You can even work with your uncle in Saudi Arabia. Now why exactly do you want to go through the rigmarole of med school all over again?".
Couldn't they just be happy for her?
People make crazy life altering decisions all the time and they survived.
So why did she see the look of horror on her dad's face when she was about to board the plan?
Why did she feel like she was being sent of to fight in Iraq instead of study in America? It was just 10 more years.
She hung on, she didn't give way to the tears. What's ten years of more studying when she could be happy with "him" forever. They didn't know about him. He was her new dream. After 8 years of on and off communication, she made the bold step and decided to move. She was going crazy. She tried to move on from him but no one was good enough. He'd ruined her for everyone else. So the day after her graduation she decided she couldn't stay in Nigeria anymore. Nothing was keeping her there.
She could still remember the look on his face when she showed up at his place in new York. She said he looked constipated, he said he probably just looked confused. But in fact he looked like Santa that everyone knew was just a myth was real and standing at his door step with the cure for cancer.
Well she was no fat guy in a red suit with a White beard but she did intend to find the cure for cancer.
Now here she was three years later stuck in a boring class when she'd rather be in the operating room with Sam. Or better still, at home with "him".
Ten hours and six cups of coffee later she was finally at her doorstep. Their door step.
It hadn't been easy over the years. It turns out showing up at his door step un invited had not been the brightest idea she ever had.
He worked for apple. In the big apple Apple branch. At the time he was working on some techie stuff for the new apple laptop model. And hopefully it would be transferred to the latest iPhone 8.4oj. So needless to say he didn't hv the time to come see her in Massachusetts. It was tough for a year but they pulled through.
Nothing was going to separate them ever again. Nothing.
He moved to MIT, well he got transferred there, and they moved in together. He could afford it. Working for apple pays a shit load. He pretty much paid for everything. All she had to do was be there. When he wasn't busy changing the view of technology for the world, he was always home to take care of her, motivate her to get off her non existent ass and study. And he gave pretty good back robs. In the end the whole struggle was worth it.
