Prologue: Someday in the Rain

The chill of December hung drearily in the air. The cold rain pattered softly on the ground, but the rhythmic noises were muffled soothingly inside the building. Inside the room, the blanket of warmth sheltered them from the bite of the winter weather outside.

It was past school hours, and the two were alone in the club room. As she quietly flipped the pages of her book, he slept soundly while the rain fell outside the windows. The others had worked him hard, she knew, so she left him alone. Time passed them by, and as the hours became later, she neared the last few pages of her book.

Finally, she stood up and returned the book to its place on the shelf. Even though it would be cold when she returned outside, she slid her arms out of her cardigan. She then quietly made her way toward him and gingerly draped the cardigan over his shoulders.

Moments later, she made her way home, sleeves and hair soaked by the bitterly cold rain. Now alone again.
