Chapter 2: Adria Black
I followed Ken's gaze to the door, seeing a group of people, one of them pointing a desert eagle at us. Ken instantly dropped the torch and put his hands up. I just raised my eyebrow at him. He was strongly built, his short sleeves showing off his muscular arms. "You broke my door." I said calmly. A guy in his early 20's stepped up. He had short black hair and thick framed glasses. "Technically the door is not yours, it's the governments." He said smartly. Everybody looked at him. The guy with the gun turned his attention back to us. "I'm about to shoot you and your complaining about the door!" He yelled. He had a short army cut in military cargo pants.
"Neal! Their just kids!" an older woman stepped forward addressing the individual with the gun or Neal. "Back off Andrea!" Neal yelled back at her. He pushed her back. "I don't care if you are going to shoot me or not, YOU BROKE MY DOOR!" I swung the rod I had and charged at Neal. "Adria!" Ken took a step towards me, but by then I already had a crossbow to my face. "Drop it missy." I looked straight at the guy with the crossbow. He had messy brown hair and with his style of dressing you could totally tell that he was a redneck. He glared at me, I returned the glaze not flinching.
"Okay how about we all put our guns, crossbows and........ sticks down."
Ken broke my stare "It's a rod!" I snapped "aluminum rod!" I dropped, Neal lowered his gun slowly and the redneck lowered his crossbow. "Thank you." Ken put his hand on my shoulder, pulling me back slightly.
"Since when are we listening to a kid! Steve shoot her!" Neal snapped and the redneck called Steve raised his crossbow again. "Not a smart move, Steve." I mocked. He growled, his finger on the trigger.
"Go on shoot." I said stepping up so my head was touching the crossbow. He glared at me, his finger shifting on the trigger.
I then grabbed the weapon pushing it up. The bolt (arrow) hissed over head and implanting itself in the wall. "Hey" Steve said raising his fist.
"Whats going on! Oh......" I felt Ken's hand loosen it's grip on my shoulder. I turned my head and looked at him, he wasn't looking at me anymore. Instead he was looking at the girl that had just stepped into the room.
She was defiantly younger then him, maybe by a year. She had her dirty blond hair tied back into a ponytail. Her dark blue eyes settled on Ken, and she smiled. "Hey sorry about Neal, he's kind of paranoid." Neal crossed his arms. "That's Steve," She gestured to the redneck, confirming my thoughts, "Andrea," she pointed at the older woman who smiled warmly, "Ian or mister genius," she pointed at the smart ass who gave the lecture about the door, "and I'm Layla." she grinned. Ken ran his fingers through his hair, restyling it. I knew very well what would come next. He walked up to her. "I'm Ken," he smirked "Ken Cornelio." He bowed slightly and kissed her hand. She blushed looking away.
"Adria!" I snapped glaring at Steve.
"We are going to set base here for awhile." Neal said quickly putting his gun in the holster. "Who gave you permission?" I snapped. "We did!" "You're not the boss!" "Yes I am!" "Ken!" He looked away from Layla. "Ya ya, whatever they can stay." My jaw dropped as Steve pushed past me, retrieving the bolt from the wall. "Lovely" Ian said walking forward followed by everyone else.
I walked up behind Ken and hit him over the head. "I hate you sometimes." "Hey!" he snapped as I wandered off to the room where the metal was locked away.
The chatter of the group died when I closed the door and flicked on the lights, looking for metal I could use to fix the door..... again.
Now would be a good time to explain Ken and I's relationship. First of all people who don't know us think we are dating which is completely wrong! Like so many levels wrong! Ken and I had been friends for the past three years. He was there for me when my parents died, he stopped me from running away and now my brother and I James had been closer than ever. So basically Ken is like my younger brother, I would do anything to keep him safe, and I bet and hope he would do the same. Still we fight a lot, everyday pretty much, sometimes it would get physical but we usually made up after breaking each others noses and with the amount of time I spend with him, I know exactly how he acts almost in every situation and nothing would ruin that I hope.
I had been gone for 10 minutes when I heard the door open and close behind me. "Yes Ken I'm fine." I turned around and instead of Ken, Neal was standing by the door.
"Okay I'll tell him that." He said calmly. "What do you want?" I stepped back leaning against the wall feeling uneasy around him. "I just want to talk."
He slowly walked towards me as I looked at his gun uneasily. "Here i'll take it off." He quickly undid the belt, dropping the holster with the gun on the floor and kicked it away.
"See, unarmed" he raised his hands. "I just want to talk." He continued advancing on me until he stood only a few inches away from me. "Thank you for letting us stay." "I didn't." I responded crossing my arms. "You don't understand what it's like out there. We have been by ourselves for the past week ever since the break in Winnipeg." I continued to glare at him. "You don't know what it was like to be afraid of every step." he leaned one hand beside my head. "What it feels like to lose everything." he whispered.
"But I do know what happened to the last guy who tried to flirt with me," I said calmly. "Oh?" "He ended up in the hospital, critical condition for 2 weeks." I lashed forward punching, punching Neal in the jaw. "Ow!" He stumbled back rubbing his jaw. "A bit of a fighter aren't you, even better." he smirked and slammed my arms against the wall, pinning them above my head with one hand. "I like girls who like to fight." I tried to get free from his iron grip, but was unsuccessful. "Now do as i say. "
Out of nowhere a fist came and punched Neal in the jaw. He stumbled back hitting a pile of metal, pushing it over and let it hit the ground with a loud clank. I looked over to the guy who threw the punch, it was Ken. I smiled "Nice punch." "Fuck kid how old are you!" yelled Neal, rubbing his now bleeding jaw. "Seventeen, and I'm only going to tell you this once, BACK. OFF." He glared at Neal and then turned back to me. "Yes I'm fine." I said and gave him a fist bump.
"Oh there you guys are." Everyone turned their attention to the door, Ian leaning against the frame. "Neal we have to talk." Neal got up looking at Ken. "Oh and you two as well." Ian turned and walked out after Neal. Ken and I looked at each other and followed them.
Outside one of the work benches had been cleared and a map of the school lay on it. "Layla and I are going for a run." Ian leaned on the bench. "Alright." Neal said sitting on the bench and rubbing his jaw. "Wait you and Layla alone?" I asked. I heard Ken behind me groan, he knew what was coming next.
"Yes just us." Ian said rising one eyebrow. "There's a problem with that." I said quickly. "What! You're not gonna let us leave!" snapped Ian. "Oh no, you can leave whenever you want, I don't care about that." "Fine we'll take you with us then!" exclaimed Ian and I laughed. "I'll give you two reasons why that wouldn't be a good idea." Ian crossed his arms and glared at me. "Anyways, one: Ken would be a better choice because he knows the school backwards and forwards, every hiding spot and I think he is gonna need more cigars soon or he will lose it." "Hey!" Ken stepped forward but I raised my hand to shush him. "He would also like to spend some time with Layla and right now he is deeply in love with her so he would just be in the way here." Layla blushed, looking down while Ken bit his lip. "Yes but-" "Ah I'm not done yet smart ass!" "Ian." he growled. "Smart ass." I said in a threatening voice and continued. "Secondly, I should stay here because I'm the only one who isn't a complete idiot!" "Hey!" Steve snapped but I shushed him. "I know this room like the back of my hand, every weak spot and so on, so I can just stay here and first of all fix the door that you fuckers broke!" I glared at Neal then looked back at Ian. "I'm done." He just looked at me with an open mouth.
"Close that or your going to catch a fly." Ian shook his head, closing his mouth. "Now blonde-" "It's Layla!" She squeaked. I just glared at her. "Blonde, Smart ass and Ken, you can go on your run."
I smiled , flipped my hair and walked away.
Everything went exactly how I said and Ken, Ian and Layla went on there run, while I went to work on the door for a good hour.
Later that evening, Steve came back from his watch, Neal going and taking his spot. I was still sitting in the back, sharpening my homemade machete I had been working on before. "Adria?" I looked up seeing Steve leaning against the tool bench. "What." I said looking back down at my work. "Your last name, is it Black, by any chance?" I raised my eyebrow and nodded. "How do you know that?" He shrugged "Long story, listen-" "Walkers!" yelled Neal. I jumped to my feet as Steve ran to the door. "It's a few coming this way!" Neal said quickly as I grabbed my aluminum rod and ran to the door just in time it burst open. I hit a walker hard in the face, hearing a crack of it's nose as it fell back hitting the ground hard.
