Prologue
We claim to know everything in this world; scientific explanations are meant to enlighten us on what we really are meant to be, but do any of us truly believe that? Aren’t we just living organisms on this planet which fight for survival? Think about it; you’ll always worry about food or warmth before even considering mental stability.
A young boy, about the age of fourteen sat on his roof with his two friends beside him, watching the world crumble around them unfazed; he had his knees pressed to his chest and stared out ahead, like everyone else he guessed it was probably something like a rapture; if this was a gods punishment then so be it, he wouldn’t grovel at its feet.
All the elements of the world seemed to be clashing with each other; a yin and yang scenario where nether one could win, except the ones that got in the way got punished. He found it fascinating and noticed so did his friends, it was nothing like on a television but much more intense, and soon it was going to come their way, majestically tearing apart the earth.
“Which would you rather, to drown or burn?” one of them said; he was named Will, the boy had his blonde hair hanging over his eyes, making look like an extremely aggressive metal head; or like a wannabe emo, although the look really did suit his sadistic personality.
They both pursed their lips, Keez couldn’t help but wonder if anyone else was thinking as simple minded as this, his other friend, Lilac, was more jumpy then both of them, scrawny with a feminine face, he outstretched his small hand and pointed to the path behind them where large amounts of whirlwinds tore at the sky. “Air of course,” he said giving a glance at Keez, who still hadn’t answered. “What about you Keez?”
Keez put on his best grin and raised his hands; “Fire, defiantly.” he could already spot the billowing smoke ahead and guessed that even if he didn’t want to die of burns, that it would be the first to reach them anyhow.
Will snickered a little, sharing glances with Keez. “Maybe we should go to it, before it comes to us?”
Pricking his ears he gapped at Will, “Are you that keen on death?”
“Better to get it over and done with.”
“You’re insane…”
The blonde haired boy leaped to his feet, treading carefully; trying not to slip from the moisture that sealed itself between the linings of bricks; Keez shook his head.
“Good luck to the both of you,” Lilac said, his head back to the fray, where people only now realized it wasn’t a dream, it became hectic, they were trying to cry over lives that were so plain and straight forward, that was one thing Keez didn’t get about survival, without any conflict why cry over your death? Some went through things, torturous things, whilst others sat their being nursed by their families until the age of twenty five, caressed with loving smiles and the maximum punishment is being grounded, what exactly was there to lose?
And besides it was pretty hopeless; trying to fight against what was most likely meant to be, or what we made it meant to be, we humans believe that we can change the future and try to make a difference, yet sometimes we just have to realise that we have dug our own graves, like a robber that robs a bank to pay for his or her child and ends up panicking, shotting a cop in the process; also like a cancer patient who just wallows in their own pity and pretty much heightens their chance of death. Keez didn’t believe this was inevitable, nothing was, yet he couldn’t help but wonder what exactly the race could have done to prevent it, or at least put it off a few more years.
Well it was too late now.
Will beckoned Keez. “If we want to die by fire we better leave before the tornados get here,” he shot a frown at Lilac. “Are you sure you don’t want to come?”
Lilac smiled upwards at them; clasping his hands together. “I’ll see you guys soon.”
Keez clenched his fists; blue eyes beaming. “Well if there is a spirit world it would be choker block by the time we get there.”
“Nah, we’re special, they’ll make a path for us.”
Laughing he patted his mate on the shoulder. “I’m sure that they’ll worship us as their elders.”
Will was already clambering off the roof by the time Keez hurriedly followed him.
And with one last glance at Lilac, they disappeared into the fray.
It was odd, he didn’t think he would ever had been this unruffled about walking straight into one of the most painful experiences imaginable, flames soldering your flesh sending your reflexes mental, it would make your body controlled by an invisible force. He knew that he and Will would have to race as close to the middle as possible until it grabbed hold of them so they didn’t flee with instinct.
“Have fun burning!” Lilac called after them as the pair started to walk away, there wasn’t anything fascinating around them as it was the expected reaction from people at the end of the world, so the boys ignored it and held their head high, they could feel the heat, it was reaching them, inch by inch, metre by metre.
After what seemed like forever he could spot an orange glare through the smoke and smiled; soon everything he had been through would come to an end, he would witness the end of what seemed like humanity it’s self.
His throat parched he felt a pull, closer to the fire it grew stronger for him but he noticed Will seemed fidgety as they got closer, sweat beads ran down the teens head and his breath came in short raspy gasps, obviously Will probably presumed fire was a cool way to die but was starting to regret his decision when it came to action. Typical.
“You’re a coward.” Keez whispered, using one arm and hitting Will in the stomach almost winding him. “Take the safe way out why don’t you?” he heard Will whimper from the pain and he closed his eyes. Now was no time to fuck around.
Before he knew it he and his friend were bolting in opposite directions, Keez felt himself break through what seemed like a heavy barrier and lunged forward, he desperately pretended the flames weren’t there; so soon just soon he would be grasped and had no escape. Then it would end, finally.
Tripping; he squinted into the flames, fire was so majestic was it not? A telling of two different stories piled into one, friend and foe. He held his head in his hands, waiting for the pain to come, to reach him and make him one with the others.
Several breaths later he felt something course through his veins, this was it. The tan boys body convulsed again and again, oddly enough all he could feel was a sensation running through his limbs; not able to identify pain from the relief that coursed through him, he could see that his body was up in flames, connected with the element. Keez was being burnt to a crisp, ravished, unlike the stereotypical screaming all he wanted to do was sigh in bliss, all he knew was the safety of the heat, it was like it was hugging him, tearing his tendons and ligaments apart but at the same time coaxing him to bury himself deeper into it.
Feeling his eyes gently start to close he could feel a presence beside him, holding his arm as if lifting him yet pushing him at the same time, was this what it was like to die? Was this why most people didn’t back out of the thought of suicide?
Closing his eyes and for once feeling a pure joy in his life he felt a release in his body; his natural instincts didn’t exist at this point in time, like his conscience finally was being released.
It was peaceful.
