Ray looked completely drained. She was standing in front of an old woman, eyes closed and pale. The woman had her hands on the sides of Ray's head and was muttering words under her breath. Her head was bowed, eyes closed, and she looked like she was concentrating real hard. I was watching them carefully and was getting ready to to run to Ray's side to help if I had to. Ray's eyes twitched and she looked like she was in pain. I was going to step forward to pull Ray away but she relaxed and looked almost like she was sleeping. What was the woman doing to her? To her mind? I wanted it to stop and for everything to be normal again. I knew that was never going to happen.

I watched as Ray's head shot up and her eyes snapped open. Instead of her shining green eyes, they were completely white. It freaked me out. The woman slowly took her hands away from Ray and opened her eyes. They looked like they were glowing gold as she muttered furiously under her breath. Her eyes never left Ray's face. I watched as white smoke-like stuff flowed from Ray's eyes like tears and circled around her feet.  The woman grinned victoriously as she watched the smoke rise and circled Ray's legs. She stopped muttering and I heard her whisper something.

"Yes, that's it." She whispered. "Rise and work!" I thought she was completely crazy. I watched as her face turned from proud to horrified. She was looking at Ray. I followed her gaze and raised my eyebrows in shock when I saw Ray's eyes. They were turning rom pure white to pitch black. The smoke swirling around was turning black like her eyes.

"No!" The woman shrieked. "Stop! Stop now!" She roughly grabbed on to Ray's shoulders and shook her. I stepped forward to stop her from hurting my sister when the boy next to me grabbed my arm, stopping me.

"Stop." He ordered. "Don't go anywhere, my grandmother knows what she's doing. I don't think you should bother with them." I stared at him. I didn't want the woman hurting my sister but I had to listen to him. His grandmother knows what she's doing. I hoped that was right. I turned my attention back to Ray and the woman. The boy's grandmother started muttering things again and Ray looked even more tired then before (if that was possible). I thought she was about ready to collapse. The now black smoke was up to Ray's chest, swirling around her body. Her brown hair was floating around her shoulders and I was pretty sure she was floating a few inches above the floor but couldn't tell because of the smoke stuff. The woman was clutching onto Ray's shoulders so hard that her knuckles turned white. She looked like she could drop down dead any second. Just as I thought that, the woman jerked away from Ray like she was pushed. As she stumbled back, Ray lifted her arms and balls of the black smoke gathered in her palms. The balls got bigger with more smoke gathering and the building shook.

"We have to get out!" The woman yelled. "This building's gonna come down and I'm sure none of us wanna be stuck here!" As she said this, the building shook again and some of the ceiling came down.

"Wait, what about Ray?!" I asked as the boy and his grandmother made their way up the stairs.

"She'll be fine!" The boy said and pulled me up the stairs.

"No she won't! The place is coming down!" I yelled. As if on cue, more pieces of the ceiling fell. The boy pulled me up the stairs and out of the store. He pushed me in the back of the car his grandmother was already waiting in outside. She was some fast old lady. Her grandson got in beside me and she drove off.

"Ray will be fine." The boy repeated.

"How?!" No one would be fine in that.

"The power she has now." The boy started to explain. "As long as it's still coming to her and is still raw she'll be fine. It'll keep her safe." I didn't know if I wanted to believe that but I had to believe that Ray would be okay. I looked out the window and felt confused.

"Uhmm, where are we going?" I asked.

"We're just gonna drive." Answered the lady. "We're gonna wait for the store to come down all the way."

"How will we know if it's down?" I asked.

"Oh, I'll know." Was all she answered with. I didn't bother asking what she meant because I didn't really care. I was too busy worrying about Ray and if she was okay.  I kept thinking about how wrong it was to leave her. We needed to turn back around to get her. We were driving for a few minutes - the whole time I was feeling guilty for leaving Ray and worrying about her - when the woman said we were going back to the store. I wanted to get there right away to find Ray. When we got to the pile of rubbish that was the store, I got out of the car before we parked. I was closely followed by the boy but his grandmother took her time getting out. My eyes fell on Ray lying at the edge of all the rubbish. Her clothes were ripped in a few spots and her face was all dirty with a long cut across her left cheek. I knelt down next to her still body and heard the lady start talking to her grandson.

"Beck." She said. "Help the boy get his sister in the car, she needs to go to the hospital." I helped Beck lay Ray on the back seats and we drove off to the hospital. When we got there, I wasn't sure what Beck's grandmother told the people there what happened but I was glad Ray was safe and getting taken care of.

I was sitting on the chair next to Ray's bed, holding her hand, and studying her face when her eyes snapped opened. I jumped by suprise and shock. Her eyes were completely white again.

"Jason!" She called out. Her voice was rough.

I sat straighter in the chair. "Yeah? I'm right here..."

Ray's head turned toward my voice and her white eyes fixed on mine. It sen chills down my spine. "Help me." She rasped and her eyes fluttered closed. The machine attached to her no longer beeped but gave out one long, continuos note. Ray died. I ran out of the room to get a doctor, hearing Ray's voice asking for help in my head. I suddenly felt useless and lost.
