Flowers bleed and wilt

in the bright warmth

of a beautiful day

and birds scream,

grasping at their throats

that tear and scar

with every breath.

They cradle their new babies

in their wings until

one spills off the nest’s edge and

lands in the soft, new grass.

The mother begins to chirp, now

and everything is still

as the grass burns white.
