This is one hell of a way to end a life
Of a confidant, a spouse, a mother, a wife
I never thought I’d be saying goodbye to you in this fashion
They said, this is what they found - when you died
They delivered you to the morgue and contacted the next of kin
I was notified at work that I needed to report to the police station
They said they would describe the nature of their request once I arrived
They said, this is what they found - when you died
The police chief was numb and unfeeling in his execution
His glossed over gaze and consoling touch on my shoulder didn’t ease the pain
He showed me a picture of your license, and asked, if you’d ever been arrested for prostitution
They said, this is what they found - when you died
Ravaging wolves were gnawing at your remains
They said, this is what they found - when you died
Your clothing ripped, bloodied, and stained
A rookie cop fired several shots to shoo the pack away
They said, this is what they found - when you died
The desert was hot and the sight of your corpse made the deputies wince
A venue of vultures circled the sky
One deputy vomited from the stench
Your car keys were several yards from where your body was found
They said, this is what they found - when you died
Your shoes were removed, your hands - tightly bound
And to none of my texts messages had you replied
It had been weeks since I heard from you and now I grieve
Your mother phones me almost every day
In my mourning there is no consolation, no relief, and no reprieve
They said, this is what they found - when you died
I keep reminding Rebecca that, “Mommy’s gone to heaven”
And she is puzzled when she sees her daddy cry
But she’s only six and does not comprehend, in a few weeks she’ll be seven
They said, this is what they found - when you died
I thumbed through our wedding album; in one picture I smashed your face with cake
All I had was your wedding ring to keep close to me; blue is the color of my pain
They said, this is what they found - when you died
And now I’m planning your wake
They ruled me out as a suspect though I admitted that our marriage was estranged
In your personal effects they found a note that simply said, “Love Evan” it taunted
They said, this is what they found - when you died
Evan Martin was your old flame, a sociopath, and now, most wanted
Carol, I trusted you when you said your trip out of town was strictly business
A police report and clues that don’t add up - makes me believe you lied
Our marriage should’ve relied on the foundation of trust
They said, this is what they found - when you died
Seductive photos were found in the trunk of your car revealing your hips and your bust
Gazing at picture after picture in varied positions, I could do nothing but cry
You said I spent too many hours at the office. I was only trying to support us
They said, this is what they found - when you died
They covered you with a sheet
You had no clothing to speak of - your corpse, badly decomposed
They were only able to retrieve prints from your hands and feet
They said, this is the “way” they found you - when you died
Shame and disgrace are now placed on both our family’s head
Becca asks is mommy coming back
I cannot lie to our daughter anymore. I tell her the truth no, mommy’s dead
They said, this is what they found when you died
They said, this is what they found when you died
An adulterous affair has destroyed our family
This isn’t how your life, our lives - were supposed to end
We should’ve grown old together; instead, you died in your sin.
