Chapter 1: The Muffle-Cube Paradox

The air in the Havenfield pastures felt thick enough to cut with a pathfinder. Sophie stood blinking against the bright, crystalline light, trying desperately to ignore the frantic fluttering of her eyelashes as she stared at the glowing gadget in Dex's hands.
"Dex, what exactly is that supposed to do?" she asked, taking a cautious step back.
Dex smiled, his dimples flashing with that familiar, infectious confidence. He adjusted a small, copper dial on a sleek silver cube that looked like a cross between an Elvin tracking device and a music box. "It's a Biometric Synced Resonance Nullifier," he said proudly. "Or, you know, a 'Muffle-Cube' for short. I built it specifically for you."Sophie tilted her head. "For me?"
"Yeah," Dex said, his cheeks tinting a faint shade of pink as he looked down at his boots. "I know how exhausting it gets when everyone's emotions slam into your head all at once—especially during collective council meetings or when Keefe is being... well, Keefe. This dampens the external noise within a five-foot radius, but only for frequencies that stress you out. It reads your heart rate to know when to kick in."
Sophie felt a sudden, profound warmth blooming in her chest. While everyone else was constantly asking her to use her powers to save the world, Dex was always the one trying to protect her from them.
"Dex, this is... incredible," she whispered, stepping closer."Test it out," he said, holding it out between them.
As Sophie reached out to touch the smooth metal, her fingers brushed against his. A soft, golden spark—a tiny bit of static electricity from the gadget's core—snapped between their hands. Sophie gasped, but she didn't pull away. Dex caught her hand gently, his blue eyes wide and searching hers. For the first time all day, the ambient noise of Havenfield's leaping animals seemed to fade into absolute silence, leaving nothing but the steady, comforting rhythm of Dex's presence right beside her.Chapter 2: No Cap, Cognate Boy

The peaceful silence didn't last. By noon, the pasture had turned into a battleground, though Sophie had long since retreated inside to help Edaline with the chores.
"I'm just saying, Foster," Keefe Sencen said, leaning back against a pasture fence with a smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes, targeting an imaginary audience. "Fitzroy here is playing checkers while I'm playing 4D chess. Frankly, it's giving boomer energy."
Fitz Vacker blinked, his pristine Elvin composure cracking. "What is a 'boomer'? And why do you keep using words that sound like exploding gnomes? Sophie isn't even out here to listen to your ridiculousness!"
"I am down bad for her, Fitz. No cap," Keefe shot back, casually checking his fingernails. "I might have slipped into a couple of her old human thoughts during our last emotional sync. The vibes are immaculate over here. You could never."
"I don't know what 'no cap' means, but I know I've been by Sophie's side since day one!" Fitz snapped, his face turning a dangerous shade of teal. "She is my Cognate, Keefe! We share a literal mind connection! She's mine!"
Sitting on a nearby boulder, Dex Dizznee just watched them, completely ignored. He was holding a half-disassembled tech-cube, a pair of Elvin tweezers in one hand, watching the drama unfold with a look of pure, unadulterated exhaustion.
As Fitz claimed her, Dex just thought to himself, Ha. No thanks. The absolute last thing he wanted was to be dragged into this weird, exhausting ownership trial over their best friend."No, she's mine!" Keefe countered, stepping right into Fitz's personal space. He threw his hands up dramatically. "She loves me more!"
"No, she doesn't!" Fitz yelled, his voice cracking slightly as his flawless composure completely disintegrated.
After like, two hours of that exact same back-and-forth loop, the sun began to dip below the horizon. The pasture grew cold, but Fitz and Keefe were still shouting the same three sentences over and over again, their voices hoarse and their capes violently wrinkled.Chapter 3: The Protocol

"You think you have the Cognate bond?" Keefe suddenly muttered, his voice shifting. He crossed his arms, leaning forward with an unnervingly calm, terrifyingly accurate human accent he had dug out from the depths of Sophie's oldest memories.
"," Keefe said, shaking his head in annoyance, his voice taking on a sharp, rapid, and incredibly exasperated Indian inflection.
Fitz froze, his hands dropping to his sides. "What? What did you just say? What is sixty-seven?!"Keefe let out a sharp, mocking laugh, completely ignoring Fitz's confusion. "! You are talking too much, brother. Just too much nonsense!" He clicked his tongue, his accent perfectly locked in as he rolled his shoulders. "Your brain is running on dial-up internet. It is a joke."
"Stop doing that with your voice!" Fitz shouted, his face turning a deep, furious shade of teal. "Why are you laughing like that?!"
Over on his boulder, Dex slowly took a bite out of a custard burst. "I don't know what the numbers mean, Fitz," Dex called out casually, wiping a bit of pastry cream from his thumb. "But honestly? He's clearing you. I'd just walk away at this point."
Suddenly, both of them snapped their heads around and looked straight at Dex, expecting him to finally take a side.
Dex blinked, holding his half-finished gadget like a shield. "What did I do?" he said innocently, raising his hands in retreat. "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Look, I like her, but she's you guys. Seriously."
Shoving his tools into his pockets, Dex turned on his heel. "Bye, (h)ave a great time!" he yelled, perfectly mimicking the classic human meme voice. He sprinted forward, planted one hand on the stone pillar, and parkoured right over the massive Havenfield gate, clearing it with a ridiculous, dramatic twist in the air.
"Did he... just say '(h)ave a great time'?" Fitz asked hoarsely. "And what is... parkour?"Keefe just stared at the gate, a sudden look of profound, horrifying realization dawning on his face. "Oh no. Foster's brain rot is spreading. He's learning."Chapter 4: The Ultimate Disappearing Act

The next day, the morning sun hit the Splendor Plains, but the vibe in the Foxfire cafeteria was completely dead. Fitz and Keefe looked like they had been run over by a herd of murkcats, while Dex and Sophie sat across from them whispered about the absolute circus from the night before.
But later that afternoon, after the school day ended and the boys had finally dragged themselves back to Havenfield to "apologize" for their behavior, Sophie decided it was time for a real change of pace.
She and Dex were sitting on the steps of the Leapmaster platform. Sophie stood up, her heart doing a nervous flip-flop. "Hey, Dex?"
"Yeah?" Dex turned, looking up at her with his usual bright, trusting smile.Sophie didn't think about the Council, the Neverseen, or the chaotic love octagon. She just stood on her tiptoes and kissed Dex gently right on the lips.
Dex froze entirely, his mechanical tools slipping from his hands and clattering against the stone steps. But just as Sophie was about to let go, the sound of quiet, furious bickering echoed from the gates. Keefe and Fitz walked right into the courtyard, stopping dead in their tracks as their jaws completely unhinged.
The silence in the courtyard was so loud you could hear a single leaf drop. Sophie looked at Fitz. She looked at Keefe. She didn't explain. She didn't apologize.
Instead, she slowly raised two fingers in a perfect peace sign, looked Keefe dead in the eye, and let out a faint, digital-sounding fizzing noise. Right before their eyes, her edges went blurry, turning into transparent, pixelated static until .
Keefe shook his head, his voice barely a whisper as he stared at the empty patch of grass. "She really just walked away... missing," he muttered weakly. "She hit us with the vanish. Deadass.""Ai ya!" Dex suddenly broke out, shaking his head with a flawless, fiercely exaggerated, and highly disappointed Chinese accent as he looked at the two frozen boys. "You two are truly hopeless! So much talking, so much fighting, and for what? Now she is gone! Entirely evaporated! You have no discipline!"
Dex calmly picked up his fallen wrenches, threw them into his satchel, and looked back at them one last time, dropping the accent with a cheerful shrug.
"Honestly? Skill issue."
And with that, he strolled out the gates, leaving Fitz and Keefe alone in the dirt, entirely defeated by the power of human internet culture. The End.
