Chapter 1: The Boy with the Blank Rune
The morning sun over the continent of Akros rose with a sharp, brilliant glare, casting long shadows across the cobblestone courtyards of the Obsidian Clan training grounds.
"Focus, Cale! If you keep drawing your runes like a sleepy toddler, even a shadow-beast will laugh at you!"
Master Vane's voice echoed harshly across the field, followed by the muffled laughter of the other young trainees.
Cale wiped the sweat from his forehead, his breathing heavy. He stared down at his palm. Faint, glowing blue lines traced across his skin-a basic energy rune meant to ignite a spark of flame. But the moment he tried to channel his energy, the light flickered and died out, leaving nothing. Not even a wisp of smoke.
Cale sighed, his golden-amber eyes dropping in frustration. Again.
In a world where everyone belonged to powerful clans-where kids his age could command crackling lightning, heavy stone, or fierce gales with a flick of their wrists-Cale was an anomaly. He belonged to the lowest tier of his clan, possessing no elemental affinity, no roaring beast spirit, and no natural mastery over the ancient arts. To the rest of Akros, he was just a powerless nobody.
"Give it up, Cale," Ryo muttered as he walked past, his aura radiating a sharp, disciplined chill. Ryo was the star pupil of their generation, a prodigy whose hands could weave complex combat runes effortlessly. "The gods didn't gift everyone with talent. Some of us are just meant to watch from the sidelines."
Cale didn't answer. He gripped his wooden practice staff tightly, his knuckles turning white. He wasn't angry at Ryo; he was angry at his own helplessness.
There has to be a way, Cale thought, clenching his fist. They say runes are drawn from the world's energy... but what if the energy is already inside us, waiting for the right key?
Later that evening, while the rest of the compound slept and the silver crescent moon hung high in the sky, Cale snuck out toward the forbidden Whispering Ruins at the edge of the forest. Old legends said that the very first symbols of Akros were carved there-shadows that could bend reality itself.
As he stepped into the ruined stone archway, the air grew ice-cold. Suddenly, the shadows around his feet began to twist and curl unnaturally, reacting to his presence.
And then, deep within the ancient stone wall, a hidden glyph began to glow with a dark, terrifying purple light-a symbol no one in generations had ever seen before.
Cale reached out, his fingers trembling as they hovered inches away from the mysterious rune. The moment his skin brushed the glowing stone, a shockwave of energy ripped through the silent night, whispering a forgotten prophecy directly into his mind.
The weaving has begun.
Chapter 2: The Whispering Stones
The dark purple light faded into a faint, smoky trail. Cale withdrew his hand, his heart pounding against his ribs. The ancient wall stood silent again, but the air around him felt heavier, charged with a strange, suffocating energy. He looked down at his palm-the place where the mysterious glyph had touched him. Faint, dark lines were now permanently etched beneath his skin, resembling a shadow tattoo.
"What... was that?" Cale whispered to the empty night.
Before he could process the strange occurrence, a twig snapped in the distance. Footsteps echoed through the ruined arches. Panic surged through him; if the clan elders caught him in the forbidden zone, he would be expelled for sure. Pulling his cloak tight, Cale slipped into the deep shadows of the pillars, blending into the darkness with unnatural ease.
