This place is like a graveyard.
I stared around the library from behind my desk, not a soul in sight. When I opened this library, I expected the townspeople to come by and have a snoop.
My expectations were far from fulfilled. I've had more English foreigners in than local French. But tourists keep the economy going so I can't complain.
My library wasn't much, maybe 50 square feet, dark academia vibes. Dark wooden shelves and yellowing lights, similar to the glare of candles. All the books were organised by genre and had been neatly arranged for the third time today.
The bell dinged as the door opened. I didn't snap my head in that direction as to not seem too eager or overbearing. I kept my eyes down, stitching a cover on a book. Footsteps grew closer and I looked up. A beautiful young woman stood before me. One of my old friends from school, Lucille.
"Hey Lucille." I greeted her.
"Hey, it's been a while." She replied.
"Yeah, how are the shows getting on?"
"Picking up a lot now." She browsed the romance section for quite a few minutes until she finally picked up a book. She came over and slid it across the desk, along with her library card.
"Just this one please." I scanned it.
"How is business here? I heard you moved from the other side of town." She asked.
"It has its good days and bad days. The landlord pulled out of the tenancy agreement so I had to move."
"God what an ass."
"Tell me about it." We both chuckled.
"We've switched things up recently, we're performing tonight at the L'Oiseau Rare if you're interested. I'd love to catch up." She smiled.
"Yeah I'll be there."
"It's a date. I'll see you tonight, thank you Angel."
They've switched things up? Switched them up how? Who's they? She's always sung solo. I'll go over tonight. I've been meaning to go out into town for some social time.
~ Time Skip ~
I sat doing my makeup in the mirror. My brunette hair was styled into a wavy half up half down, and I wore burgundy lipstick, a little eyeliner and mascara. I've never been too into makeup, just the things that enhance the features you already have.
I wore a burgundy skater dress, black leather jacket and matching black heels. I felt good about myself, which doesn't happen often.
I strutted out with confidence into the town, enjoying the evening breeze with the sunset.
As I approached the L'Oiseau Rare, I could see Lucille standing outside the alleyway next to it. She spotted me and waved me over. As I got closer, a man stepped into view from the alley.
The first thing I noticed was his height, easily 7 feet tall. He wore a white suit with a pale blue scarf around his neck, a large white hat as well as a white mask covering the top half of his face. I slowed for a second, hesitating as I didn't know this man, but greeted Lucille anyway.
"Glad you came." She smiled. I smiled back. The man said nothing, just watched our interaction. I glanced at him, his orange eyes stared directly at mine. That glance lasted half a second before I snapped away, too intimidated.
"This is Monsieur Francoeur." Lucille gestured up towards him.
He smiled and nodded, his eyes disappearing for a second under his white hat.
"Angeline, but call me Angel."
He tilted his head slightly, before another man came from down the alley.
"Lucille, Francoeur, you're on in 10."
"Okay we'll be there soon." She called to him before he disappeared into the building. She turned back to me.
"We'd better go, we'll see you in there." She waved goodbye and turned to walk down the alley. Francoeur remained where he was, staring at me with his hands in his pockets, head still tilted.
I locked into uncomfortable eye contact with him, his eyes bore into my soul.
"Francoeur!" Lucille shouted. He blinked, snapping out of it and turned to leave. His gaze held on me until he fully turned round and followed his partner. I brushed it off and went inside the main entrance.
I found a seat at the bar and grabbed a drink. A text came through on my phone.
"Where are you?" - Elliot
I rolled my eyes. My boyfriend with slight control issues. We'd been together for around a year and actually met in this bar.
We'd recently fought about him constantly checking up on me. He had my location, I don't understand why he needs to ask me. I wouldn't mind once or twice a day, but it's every time I move location, he texts me. As if he's watching me all day to see when I move.
We weren't exactly on speaking terms at the minute, but I know he watches my location still. This is the first message I've had today, only because I've gone out somewhere different.
"You know where I am." - Delivered.
Asshole.
I turned my phone off and observed the room quietly. Tables were bustling, waiters were everywhere between tables, yet it was a nice atmosphere.
Just then, the lights dimmed so I turned my attention to the stage. The curtain lifted, revealing Lucille in a white ankle length dress with angel wings on her back.
Francoeur walked on stage next to her, guitar in hand. It actually looked like a ukulele in comparison to him, but that was a full size guitar.
I wonder what his mother fed him to grow like that.
I watched as his eyes followed Lucille for reassurance.
Bless him.
His eyes then scanned the room, looking for something. I turned my back to them so I was facing the bar, not wanting anymore awkward eye contact.
"Thank you all for coming, I have a special guest this evening. Monsieur Francoeur." I turned back around, drink in hand, watching from the dimly lit bar. His eyes were drawn back to her as she welcomed him. The audience gave a polite clap and they started their performance.
I smiled at her choice of song.
Wow...I really wasn't expecting that. I had no idea he would sing, especially after his silent treatment 15 minutes ago.
The crowd erupted in applause as the pair bowed hand in hand. Francoeurs eyes landed directly on me as I was clapping.
Just then, another text came through.
"Turn around." - Elliot.
All happiness left my body as I sighed. I turned in my chair and there he was, stood in the doorway that led to the main hall. I rolled my eyes and made my way over to him. As I got closer, I saw how angry he looked.
This is gonna be rough.
