Jude Bellingham was what some would call a prodigy. He could use scraps from just about anything- tv's, car stereo's, radios, and build it into something useful. His work should have been recognized less as work and more as a form of art. He was wiring software before most other boys hit puberty.

He took a deep, apprehensive breath before peaking out of the blinds of the run down house he had been working out of. It was trashed for the most part, save for a few couches and some shelf stable cans in the kitchen.

He placed his hand readily over the gun tucked away in his pocket. His motion detecting software he had wired around the perimeter hadn't picked up any signs of life since the day before.

"No motion since yesterday morning." He reassured himself under his breath.

He carefully opened the door. The biggest, riskiest step in his plan. He took one step outside, avoiding making a sound at all costs. He gripped the solar panels he had tucked under his arm tightly and slowly walked out onto the burnt remnants of what used to be grass in the yard.

The sun blared down on him unforgivingly and blinded him as he crept silently through the yard and up the rusted metal shaft to the roof. He hadn't been outside in a very, very long time. His heart pounded as he climbed the ladder one careful step at a time, balancing the panels under his arm and a wrench in his mouth with great care. The steps creaked slightly under his weight and he winced, his pulse beating loudly in his temples and his fear white hot in his chest.

He climbed silently onto the sun bleached shingles of the roof, avoiding the many spots that drooped from years of neglect. The roof crunched under his weight and for one terrifying moment he thought the all but ruined foundation would give way beneath him. He took a shaky breath in and found the sturdiest patch he could and crouched to set up the solar panels.

Sweat dripped steadily from his forehead in the ruthless glare of the sun. He checked the index on his watch.

116° F

46° C

He shook his head and connected the panels. The heat had only been worsening. Each year the high climbed to new heights, and winter hadn't come for decades. Jude had always wondered what snow looked like.

The ruins of the neighborhood were silent around him as he slowly made his way down the ladder. No dogs barked, no cars drove past, no friendly neighbors greeted one another or watered a garden. The houses, rather what was left of them, were almost all uninhabitable. Shattered glass and splintered siding littered the lawns, and all of the useful scraps had long since been picked over by the survivors. No breeze today. No breeze most days. Jude took note to log about it later as he crept across the lawn and made his way back into the house.
