The first sign that something was wrong was the silence.

Elena had been staring through the airplane window at endless blue ocean when the engines suddenly stopped.

Not became quieter.

Stopped.

She looked up.

Across the aisle, a boy with messy blond hair was looking around too.

She had noticed him at the airport.

He'd been sitting with his headphones around his neck, looking like someone who had absolutely no concern about being late for anything.

Now the confidence was gone.

The plane dropped.

People screamed.

Elena's stomach lurched.

Oxygen masks fell from the ceiling.

The boy grabbed the seat in front of him.

"Brace!"

"I know!"

"Then do it!"

"Stop yelling at me!"

He stared at her.

"Seriously?"

The plane shook violently.

Elena ducked.

The world became noise.

Metal.

Screaming.

Alarms.

Then—

Nothing.

Elena woke underwater.

She kicked upward and broke the surface, gasping.

Cold seawater surrounded her.

Pieces of the airplane floated everywhere.

She swam toward the beach.

When she finally reached the sand, she collapsed.

"Hello?"

People were everywhere.

Some were injured.

Some were crying.

Some were searching through the wreckage.

Elena pushed herself up.

Twenty-eight survivors.

Twenty-eight.

She looked toward the ocean.

No rescue boat.

No other aircraft.

Nothing.

Behind them was dense jungle.

And mountains.

Then someone climbed out of the wreckage.

The blond boy.

His hair was wet and sticking to his forehead. A small cut marked his eyebrow.

He looked at her.

"You okay?"

"Fine."

"You don't look fine."

"You don't look fine either."

He touched his eyebrow.

"Oh."

Elena almost laughed.

Almost.

"What are you called?"

"Roger."

"Elena."

"Nice to meet you."

"Under better circumstances."

"Definitely."

A loud crack came from the wreckage.

Roger immediately pointed.

"Everyone away from the plane!"

The survivors moved.

Elena followed.

She didn't know it yet, but Roger would become the person she trusted most on the island.

And, at the beginning, the person she couldn't stand.
