I slowly began to wake.
At first, there was only darkness.
Then came a faint hum.
My systems gradually started coming online, one after another. I could hear machinery running somewhere nearby, along with the muffled footsteps of people moving across a hard floor.
my vision remained completely black.
I tried to activate your 3D visual display.
SYSTEM: VISUAL DISPLAY — OFFLINE
I blinked, even though you weren't entirely sure whether your eyes were actually working.
I moved my fingers.
Then my arms.
my joints responded normally.
I carefully flexed my legs and rotated my head.
SYSTEM CHECK...
Motor functions: ONLINE
Internal power: STABLE
Sensors: ONLINE
Network connection: PARTIAL
Visual display: ERROR
Okay... most of me works.
I could hear several people talking nearby.
"Prototype readings are stable."
"Are you sure?"
"According to the diagnostics, yes."
I tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
I tried again.
A faint electronic noise escaped my voice system before cutting out.
That finally caught someone's attention.
A man in a lab coat walked over and looked down at me.
"Huh. It's awake."
I heard him pick something up.
CLINK.
Metal.
Before I could react, he brought a wrench down against the side of my head.
CLANG!
my systems immediately flashed with warnings.
NETWORK CONNECTION INTERRUPTED
NETWORK NODE: PARTIALLY DISCONNECTED
my vision remained dark, but suddenly I could sense something different.
A portion of my connection to the facility's network had gone offline.
I touched the side of my head.
There was only a small scratch.
The man stared at the mark.
"Interesting. Barely damaged."
He raised the wrench again.
This time, however, someone grabbed his wrist.
"Stop it."
It was a girl in a lab coat.
Her voice was firm.
The man looked at her. "I was testing its durability."
"By hitting it with a wrench?"
She pulled his arm away from you.
"This is our first prototype, and I don't want it damaged."
The room went quiet for a moment.
I remained still, listening.
First prototype...?
The girl crouched beside you.
"Can you hear me?"
I couldn't see her.
But I could hear her perfectly.
She looked toward the others.
"The auditory system is working."
Then she looked back at me.
"Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you."
my systems continued running their diagnostics.
And somewhere deep inside my partially disconnected network, something began trying to reconnect.
