New York City December 2025
Raindrops had fallen in an everlasting string of pearls ever since the day began.
By the time I finally made my way back from another painfully long day at university, the sky had dissolved into a mess of murky gray clouds hanging low over the city. The streets gleamed beneath the warm yellow lights, as the icy wind swayed through my coat no matter how tightly I wrapped it around myself.
Home.
I guess you could call it that or at least, until the end of the lease.
My apartment was barely big enough to turn around in, and even then, the rent somehow managed to eat most of my monthly budget.
I slipped inside, locked the door, then double-checked it.
Crime rate in this city is no joke.
It's been getting even worse lately. There had been another incident a few blocks from campus that afternoon, and the police had been warning people to stay alert and I for sure wasn't about to become another safety freak story to tell.
I tossed my bag onto the floor, peeled off my damp coat, and headed straight for the shower. Twenty minutes later, wrapped in an oversized hoodie and feeling slightly more human, I pulled a container of yesterday's leftovers from the fridge and shoved it into the microwave.
While it hummed, I grabbed my phone.
Nothing unusual.
A few social media notifications. A couple of university updates. And, as always, another headline about the latest incident downtown.
CITY OUTBREAK CONTAINED — SPIDER-MAN SPOTTED AT SCENE.
Another outbreak.
Another Spider-Man sighting aka the city saviour.
I scrolled past the article, but not before catching a blurry photograph of Spider-Man disappearing between two buildings.
When does this guy even get a break?
The microwave beeped.
I glanced at it.
Still cold in the middle.
"Ugh" I groaned.
My stomach growled in agreement.
I shoved it back in for another minute, flopping onto the couch as I mindlessly scrolled through my phone.
Ting!
Two new notifications.
I opened them.
Peter: Hi, sorry to bother you, but I missed chem today. Would you mind sending me your notes?
I sighed.
That's Peter always missing class doing god knows what, still a genius nonetheless and overall a nice guy.
I was about to open our chat when another notification appeared.
Boyfriend: I'm bored. Remember that sheer dress you wore last time? Send me more pics of it.
Pfft...
"Boys...typical"
The microwave beeped again.
This time, I ignored it.
I opened my gallery, selected the pictures my boyfriend wanted, and sent them to his chat.
Then I backed out, opened Peter's conversation, found the photos of my chemistry notes, and sent those to him.
I even watched the little Delivered notification appear beneath each message.
Both got what they wanted, now I can rest and enjoy my meal.
At least, that was what I thought.
I tossed my phone onto the couch, grabbed my now-warm leftovers, and settled in for a movie.
For a while, everything felt normal.
Outside, sirens occasionally echoed through the rain. Once, I thought I heard something heavy land on the roof across the street.
I glanced toward the window.
Nothing.
Just rain.
I turned back to the television.
A few hours later, my empty container sat on the coffee table, the movie credits rolling silently across the screen.
I yawned and reached for my phone before heading to bed.
Three new notifications.
I frowned.
The first was from Peter.
Peter: +4 new messages
The second was from my boyfriend.
Boyfriend: Wtf? These are chemistry notes. I don't even take that class.
Uh oh.....
To be continued ...
