Chapter One — Cam

Cam knew Clark was lying.

He just didn't know why Clark thought he was stupid enough not to notice.

They'd been through everything together. The good days, the horrible arguments, the nights where neither of them wanted to hang up first.

Clark knew exactly how much Cam cared.

Maybe that's why it hurt so badly.

Cam stared at his phone.

Clark: you up?

Cam: yeah

A minute passed.

Clark: i miss you

Cam frowned.

Cam: you were ignoring me all day

The typing bubble appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Clark: i've been busy

Cam rolled his eyes.

"Of course."

Then Clark sent another message.

Clark: i love you though

Cam stared at those words.

He wanted to believe them.

He really did.

Cam: then why does it feel like you don't?

Clark didn't answer.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Then Cam opened social media.

And there he was.

Clark.

Online.

Laughing in someone else's comments.

Cam's heart sank.

He messaged him again.

Cam: seriously?

Seen.

No reply.

Cam put his phone down.

He wasn't going to chase him.

Not tonight.

But twenty minutes later, his phone buzzed.

Clark: why are you mad?

Cam laughed to himself.

That was Clark.

He'd start the fire and then ask why Cam was standing in the smoke.

Cam: because you don't treat me like you love me

Clark: you're being dramatic

Cam's eyes burned.

Cam: maybe i'm tired of being dramatic every time you hurt me

Nothing.

Then:

Clark: i don't want to fight

Cam: neither do i

Cam stared at the screen.

Cam: i just want you to care

That message stayed on read.

And somehow, that was the moment Cam realized something.

He wasn't asking Clark for too much.

He was just asking the wrong person.

Chapter Two — Clark

Clark hated seeing Cam upset.

He just hated admitting that he was usually the reason.

He stared at their conversation for almost an hour.

He could apologize.

He should apologize.

Instead, he typed:

Clark: i'm sorry

Then deleted it.

Typed again.

Deleted it again.

Finally:

Clark: can we talk tomorrow?

Cam didn't answer.

For the first time, Clark felt scared.

Not scared that Cam was angry.

Scared that Cam was finally tired.

Because Clark knew something Cam didn't.

Every time Cam threatened to leave, Clark panicked.

Every time Cam actually started letting go, Clark pulled him back.

And maybe that wasn't love.

Maybe it was selfishness.

But Clark wasn't ready to lose him.

Not yet.

Chapter Three — The Worst Kind of Love

The next day, they talked.

They apologized.

They promised.

They laughed.

And somehow, they ended up right back where they'd started.

That's what made them dangerous together.

They were terrible at being apart.

They were even worse at being together.

Cam loved Clark.

Clark loved Cam.

But love didn't magically fix jealousy.

It didn't erase lies.

It didn't make apologies permanent.

And it definitely didn't stop two people from hurting each other.

They kept choosing each other.

Over and over.

Even when they shouldn't.

Especially when they shouldn't.

And neither of them realized yet that their biggest fight was still coming.

One that would change everything.
