The gym was an absolute furnace of high-pitched squeaks, thunderous drums, and the rhythmic roar of two huge cheering sections echoing off the rafters. Up high in the wooden bleachers, Kana leaned forward, resting her chin in her hands. The cool weight of her silver moon pendant tapped against her dark navy sweater as she shifted, her sneakers planted firmly on the riser below.

"Shiratorizawa's volleyball program is just on another level," a guy a few rows down remarked, adjusting his camera lens. "Their junior high team plays like a high school powerhouse. It's non-stop brute strength."

"Yeah, but Kitagawa Daiichi isn't giving up easily either," his friend chimed in. "Their setter is a prodigy. Look at how he controls the tempo!"

Kana let out a soft, warm breath, her deep blue-gray eyes taking in the entire floor. She knew both teams were formidable, but as the two squads lined up across the net, her gaze naturally drifted away from the hyped-up setter and the imposing ace.

It landed straight on a lanky boy with bright red hair that defied gravity, bouncing with an almost cartoonish energy on his toes.

The whistle blew, and the match erupted into chaos.
Throughout the sets, the crowd's focus was split strictly down the middle: the blistering spikes from Shiratorizawa's offense, or the sharp, tactical sets from Kitagawa Daiichi.

But Kana couldn't look away from Satori Tendou.

"Man... look at number five," a girl sitting two seats away whispered to her friend, pulling back slightly. "The way he twitches his shoulders... it's kind of creepy, isn't it?"

"Right? His eyes get so big when he jumps. It gives me goosebumps," the friend agreed with an uneasy shudder. "He's fast, but it's just unsettling."

Kana's right hand unconsciously reached up, pushing a wavy strand of dark hair behind her ear as she watched him.

Unsettling? she thought, a tiny, amused smile twitching at the corner of her lips. He's brilliant.

Down on the court, Tendou wasn't following the standard blocking textbook. He wasn't waiting for the setter's hands to move or tracking the ball's trajectory after it left the fingers.

He was reading the setter's subtle body language, watching the spiker's posture, completely trusting a raw, wild intuition.

How does someone even think like that? Kana wondered, her eyes wide with genuine awe.

Tendou suddenly shot into the air, extending his long arms with incredible speed. SNAP. The ball slammed hard off his hands, hitting the opponent's floor before their backline could even react.

"Guess Block!" Tendou sang out, bursting into a ridiculous, exaggerated victory dance—flailing his arms, grinning ear to ear, and swaying his hips without a single care for who was watching.

While half the gym looked slightly baffled or uncomfortable by his unpredictable display, Kana let out a quiet, delighted laugh under her breath.

She loved every second of it. His sudden shifts from terrifyingly sharp focus to pure, unfiltered goofy joy were completely captivating.

When the final whistle echoed through the hall, signaling Shiratorizawa's hard-fought victory, the gym exploded into applause. The players lined up along the end line, bowing deeply to the crowd.

"Kana! Hey, Kana, did you hear us?"

Kana blinked, turning her head as her friends bumped her shoulder, snapping her out of her trance.

"You've been staring down there with this soft little smile the whole match," her friend teased, leaning in.

"What's going on in that head of yours? Admiring the ace? Or that amazing setter from Kitagawa Daiichi?"

Kana looked back down at the court. The giant ace was walking off calmly, but right beside him, Tendou was still hopping around, making funny faces and boasting to his teammates about his final shut-down block.
She rested her elbows on her knees, her eyes tracking the tall, red-haired middle blocker as he wiped sweat from his forehead with his jersey.

"Tendou-kun," Kana said softly, her voice warm, practical, and entirely sincere. "He's just so cool."

Her friends froze, staring at her in genuine, wide-eyed surprise. "Wait... Tendou? The really bizarre guy who dances?"

Kana only smiled, her deep blue-gray eyes bright under the gym lights as she watched him walk toward the bench.

That match set the rhythm for the years that followed.

Through her first and second years at Shiratorizawa Academy, whenever the volleyball team played, Kana was there. Rain or shine, she'd haul her heavy backpack up into the stands, wrapping herself in her oversized cardigans or burgundy hoodies, tucking her feet beneath the bleachers.

People around her in the crowd would always talk about the raw power of the team, the strict discipline, the unstoppable spikes. But Kana's eyes always found the boy who played volleyball like it was his own personal playground.

She watched him grow taller, watched his guess blocking get sharper, and watched him keep that same wild, eccentric spirit despite what anyone else thought. And every single time he pulled off an impossible block and broke into his silly victory song, Kana would sit up high in the bleachers, pushing her hair behind her ear, smiling to herself at how amazingly, effortlessly cool he truly was.
