Net had always thought that losing someone would feel like a sudden thing.
A slammed door.
A final goodbye.
A hand slipping out of his.
Something loud enough that he would know, without a doubt, that it was happening.
He had never considered that sometimes, losing someone could happen quietly.
A missed call here.
A cancelled dinner there.
A conversation that ended too early.
A message left unanswered for a little longer than usual.
A growing distance that neither person acknowledged because saying it aloud would make it real.
That was how it had started with JJ.
Quietly.
And somehow, that was what scared Net the most.

The rain had been falling for almost an hour when Net arrived home.
He stood outside the apartment for a moment, staring at the faint light underneath the door.
JJ was awake.
He knew because JJ always waited for him.
Even when Net told him not to.
Even when he said he would be home late.
Even when he insisted that JJ didn't have to wait up.
There was always a light left on.
Tonight was no different.
Net unlocked the door quietly.
The first thing he saw was JJ asleep on the couch.
His head had fallen against the armrest, one hand loosely holding his phone. The television was still on, playing some movie neither of them had finished the last time they watched it.
Net stood there for several seconds.
He should have felt relieved.
Instead, something heavy settled in his chest.
JJ had been waiting for him again.
And Net had given him another reason to.
He set his keys down as quietly as possible and walked over.
"JJ."
Nothing.
Net crouched beside the couch.
"Hey."
JJ stirred, eyelashes fluttering before his eyes slowly opened.
For a second, he looked confused.
Then he saw Net.
"You're home." His voice was soft and sleepy.
"Yeah." Net smiled faintly. "Why are you still awake?"
JJ glanced at the clock. "Wasn't planning to."
"You fell asleep waiting."
"I wasn't waiting."
Net raised an eyebrow.
JJ looked away. "I was watching a movie."
"The movie ended twenty minutes ago."
"You don't know that."
