The Bel-Air Prelude
Los Angeles, California
Late July — Six Weeks Before High School Kickoff
The salt breeze off the Pacific didn't quite reach the upper terrace of the Bel-Air estate, where the heavy summer air smelled of night-blooming jasmine, woodsmoke from outdoor fire pits, and expensive perfume.
Seventeen-year-old Matt Wright leaned against a low travertine wall overlooking a glass-like infinity pool. He felt entirely out of place.
He was two months away from his senior year at Westlake, six weeks out from grueling two-a-day practices in the Texas heat, and currently wearing an ivory linen shirt Kelly had aggressively styled him into at their hotel two hours ago.
His three older sisters were in their absolute element.
Daphine was holding court near a low leather lounge sofa, laughing easily with a French creative director.
Emily stood across the patio matching a pair of celebrity stylists drink for drink, while Kelly was currently introducing herself to a record executive with the effortless polish of someone who had navigated VIP guest lists since middle school.
"Try not to look like you're reading a defense," Kelly had teased him at the security gate. "Just stand up straight, look broad-shouldered, and keep your hands out of your pockets. It's L.A."
Matt took a slow sip of sparkling water, watching the Los Angeles skyline sprawl into a grid of amber lights below.
He was built like a future first-round draft pick—six-foot-five, wide frame, posture forged in weight rooms—but the moment anyone asked where he went to school, the adult illusion crumbled.
"You look like you're plotting an escape," a voice noted beside him.
Matt turned his head.
Kendall Jenner was leaning against the same stone wall, barely three feet away. She was nineteen—already operating in an international stratosphere of fame that made the high school football hysteria back in Texas look miniature.
She wore a simple, razor-sharp dark slip dress, her dark hair pulled back, holding a glass with a single large ice cube. She was looking at him with mild, amused curiosity.
Matt didn't freeze—his dad had trained him to keep his pulse under control regardless of a collapsing pocket—but he felt the subtle, electric shift in the room's energy.
"Not an escape," Matt said, his Central Texas drawl sliding through with quiet confidence. "Just calculating how early I can leave before my sisters realize I took the rental car keys."
Kendall let out a brief, quiet laugh, taking a slow sip. Her eyes swept over him—noticing the broad frame, the fresh-cut blonde hair, the sharp jawline, and the quiet awkwardness of someone who clearly spent more time in turf cleats than private hillside estates.
"You're the brother," she said, connecting the dots as her eyes flicked across the patio toward Emily and Kelly. "The quarterback."
"Guilty," Matt said smoothly. "Matt."
"Kendall."
"I know," he said simply. "Hard to miss."
A slight, amused curve touched the edge of her lips. She turned her body toward him, resting a slender forearm against the stone ledge. "So, what are we looking at? Senior year?"
Matt winced slightly, though his posture didn't break. "Starts in six weeks."
"A high school kid," she repeated, her tone laced with light, playful irony. "You look like you should be starting on Saturdays already."
