Billy Kaplan had spent the last several hours trying not to think about what had happened.
It wasn't working.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Agatha.
Her face.
Her voice.
The basement.
The strange feeling of magic surrounding him as he tried to understand what he was becoming.
And then there was the fact that he was alone.
Again.
Billy stood at the edge of the road, staring into the distance as the wind moved through the trees around him.
He should have been relieved.
Agatha was gone.
The coven was gone.
He had survived.
But relief wasn't what he felt.
He felt empty.
Billy looked down at his hands.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a faint blue glow appeared between his fingers.
He immediately closed his hands.
"No."
The glow disappeared.
Billy exhaled slowly.
He'd been doing that for hours.
Every time his emotions rose, the magic followed.
A little spark.
A flicker.
A sudden movement from something nearby.
It wasn't like before.
Something had changed.
Maybe it had changed when he became Wiccan.
Maybe it had changed when he'd been forced to confront everything he'd been running from.
Or maybe he'd simply never understood how powerful he actually was.
Billy looked toward the road again.
"Okay," he whispered. "One thing at a time."
His first priority was Tommy.
Tommy was out there somewhere.
Billy knew that.
He had to.
But Tommy hadn't simply disappeared.
Billy had made him.
Or, at least, he had made the body Tommy now lived in.
The truth was more complicated than that.
Billy and Tommy had both died inside the Hex. Their original bodies had died when the Hex ended, but Billy's soul had found a way to survive. When the car crashed, his spirit had jumped into the body of William Kaplan.
Tommy had been different.
Billy had created a body for him, desperate to give his brother somewhere to live. But the boy Billy had placed Tommy inside had been drowning in a swimming pool the last time Tommy knew anything about him.
Billy had never known what happened after that.
He hadn't known the boy's name.
He hadn't known what he looked like now.
